most noticable is a really muddy low end. data is fine as per tranfer, but the monitor realy blows.
i had them look at it (supposedly) when i sent it in for the upgrade -- it checked out.
i use mdr 7506

The headphone output does sound bad on the 722. I think it lacks any sort of fidelity and is pretty much a joke of an audio signal. I wouldn't make any critical judgments based on it. The line out of the 722 is somewhat better, but there's no volume control on it. In the end, there's only so much fidelity that's possible to attain through an 1/8" mini-jack.

I was discussing an issue with SD a couple of years ago and during the conversation SD acknowleged the headphone playback not being that great. They were more concerned with the quality of the other compoents.
Seems like a fair tradeoff.

i do see why they cut corners on this, but with the same headphones my ipod, i do not experience the same mud.

the only headphone amp i've ever used that had any respectable performance at all was the FR2.
