Title: Similar units to the UA-5?
Post by: gambra on July 12, 2007, 01:52:07 PM
I'm near set on picking up a UA-5 but since they're near impossible to buy nowadays and the Oade Bros don't sell them anymore, I'm wondering what other kind of units do the same kind of thing (pre-amp/AD conversion etc) and that can be modded? Any hints?

Good question.

I was looking into the same issue, but from searching the site, I think everything else is gonna cost at least 4/5x as much.

Dave.

If you're interested in getting a UA5, you can buy a used one, and have it modded by Busman.  He does great work.   You can probably find one here in the ys that's all ready modded.

They've been at pretty blow-out prices lately, too.

One just went on eBay for $96, although they've been going for about $130 normally. You just need to keep your eye peeled on those.

They aren't easy to get, but it isn't difficult either.

I bought a used, stock UA-5 at http://www.daddys.com/ (http://www.daddys.com/) for $75 a month ago. However, I think that's rare as I haven't seen one there since, at any price. Worth checking every once in a while, though. It's a good place for random, used gear.

Ended up doing the digimod myself. Decided to wait until mid afternoon, after the coffee jitters had subsided but before the alcohol infusion. Still shook like a leaf just from the thoughts of porking the modification. Not sure I breathed once during the entire surgery. Worked out fine though.

Be patient and you'll find something in your budget.

but I wouldn't ask him to hold it for you for a month while you go on vacation like you did with me.

I honestly think it isn't THAT hard to score a UA-5. Just a little patience and you'll get one.

The UA5 was a huge success and a very widely used pre-amp. I don't want to say its a thing of the past because it definitly is not, but since they don't make them anymore, many people who owned them are upgrading to higher end gear. Therefore, you should have too hard of a time finding one.

They pop up on eBay on a regular basis as well. Just keep an eye out. When you're ready to buy, jump on one.

Never owned one, but they are a great box.

There's still a Oade T+mod UA5 available:

 ;)

An excellent box, in all seriousness.

m-audio fast track pro is similar. it has coax digi out/in, but works standalone without any mod.

Just giving this a bump as I am still keeping my eyes open for a pre>A/D type thingy.

Any other suggestions people?

TIA
