Hey guys, would it be possible to run AKC C-1000s mics or Studio Projects C4 mics with a CA ST-9000 preamp? If so, what type of cable would I need to go from the mics to the pre and is it readily available? I'd be running them with an R-09. Thanks in advance for all the help so far. rWc3523

Do they require phantom power? If so then you can't run them with a CA preamp or the likes. You need a phantom power adapter and/or preamp. I had a similar question in another thread though. I have a phantom supply for my Joe Meeks, but I was wondering if it would be possible to put a SP preamp in line with that if it would boost the mics sensitivity without having to spend more money on a bigger preamp. I doubt it's possible, but you never know.

I know for a fact the akg c1000's can run on phantom or internal battery's.

Thanks guys, but is there a way to run either of these mics with a R-09 ? Appreciate the help. rWc3523

you can run the AKG C1000s on a 9v battery. You then won't need a phantom power unit or preamp. A lot of people have run a pair of C1000s ->transformers -> recorder (line in usually, but mic in works too) The transformers I'm taliking about are these (http://www.hosatech.com/hosa/products/mit_transformers.html) When I ran the C1000s I had a pair of AT transformers but they're basically all the same. The C4s require phantom power, so if you're looking to avoid purchasing a preamp, or a phantom power supply, you won't be able to go that route. Hope this helps.

Thanks, dgodwin. Doesn't the R-09 have sufficient phantom power for those mics? How about a Church Audio ST-9000 preamp? Thanks again. Russ C.

neither the R-09 nor the Church Audio ST-9000 preamp provide phantom power. The church preamp provides power to smaller microphones, usually either lavalier or hanging microphones, that would normally connect to a wireless body pack (right, Chris?) It's not designed to provide phantom power. The mic-in on the R-09 is designed for the stereo mic (http://www.edirol.net/products/en/CS-15/) you can purchase for it and other "plug-in powered microphones"

So is there a way to run that type of mic with an R-09? What type of pre-amp or power supply would I need. And I'm just tossing this around for the moment. I have an st-9000 and CA cards coming, but I'm just thinking of other options. Appreciate the help. rWc3523

as good as the church cards sound, i would save the 300 you would spend on c1000's and get something better. i started with c1000's and once you get the bug you would want to upgrade. run your church audio and get the hang of running and enjoy while saving cash. i have heard some recent avantone ck1 recordings that sound better than many of my old c1000 recordings. they are inexpensive with multiple caps that come with the mics.

jk, that's what I plan to do for the time being. One thing with taping is there seems to always be a wealth of available equipment. I'm going to try and rig up a stand for the CA Cards and have fun around here! I've seen several neat ideas from very cheap to expensive, with little to quite a bit of work involved. I think I'll just clip them to a homemade T-bar first then look at playing with some PVC maybe. Some good ideas here. Thanks for the advice. Russ C.

i am really interested in advice on a set of mics to purchase. i can spend $500-$750 and would be running into a sony dat deck or a microtrack.
thanks!

do you have a pre-amp to run between the mics and the recorder? If not I'd suggest you split your budget and spend a portion of it on a pre-amp and part on mics. You could get a digi-mod ua-5 and some avantone ck1s, studio project c4s, or oktava mc-12 and still be in your price range. If you have a pre-amp I'd look at mics like the akg460, beyer mc930, ADK TL, or about a half dozen other nice mics in that price range.
