Wondering if you plug this card into the CF slot and then use the CF utility if one could empty the R-4's internal HD to an external HD without the use of a computer.

any thoughts?

First that won't work it's pcmcia.  Second CF and IDE are compatible with the right adapter so it is possible.  The problem I foresee is getting power to the hard drive.   What you need is something like this http://www.esskabel.de/English-Site/products/adapters/CompactFlash/ADA-COMPACTFLASH-ATA-IDE40/ADA-COMPACTFLASH-ATA-IDE40-haupt.htm (http://www.esskabel.de/English-Site/products/adapters/CompactFlash/ADA-COMPACTFLASH-ATA-IDE40/ADA-COMPACTFLASH-ATA-IDE40-haupt.htm)
