CF to ipod IDE Adaptor, work as 1.8" toshiba Hard Drive
I think this is a new product. Looks fairly low profile..so maybe it will work in Iriver. It is a bit expesive now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them start showing up for under $10.

It "should" work but my only concern is if it will actually fit inside. I ordered one the other day to find out so I'll keep you posted.

That's interesting. I too would be concerned about it actually fitting inside, but you may be able to ditch the case and make it work. Have the prices on CF cards come down to the point that this would be financially feasable compared to just replacing a bad hardrive?

CF are still more expensive, but you would get better battery life and not have to wrry about the HDD breaking during a show.
This is cool. If my HDD goes on my H320, this is what I will try...

Please keep us posted. I emailed the seller asking for dimensions and will report back if he reponds. 4gb=$44, 8gb=$93, 16gb=$135. CF prices keep droping anyway. Think how much cooler it will run without the HD.

from the seller:
hello, it is roughly, 4.75 (ide head to the end) x 5.1 (wide) x 0.55 (thickness), it is as small as a 1.8" HDD

I cannot guarantee 100% this will work but at least the connector looks OK.
If not, Rockbox can always be changed to support it ;)

It should work since the iPod and the iRiver use the same drive type. Check out this site.

He got his ipod working with a home made adapter and a CF card. CF is the same spec as IDE so there should be no problems.

Sure... unfortunately life isn't always that easy. I just wanted to say that it isn't 100% guaranteed that it will work - that last 0.01% is actually trying it. And as I said, if it turns out there is a compatibility issue, Rockbox is open source and well supported ;)

Well I got the adapter today and snapped some picts. The adapter has a very large jumper on the front that is taller than everything else. I am pretty sure I am going to have to trim that.
Side by side next to the broken drive i pulled out of my iRiver. You can see the jumper in this picture on the front right edge.

Overall it doesn't feel too cheap and I think I can make it work. It is going to need some slight mods to get the thing fit. I'll keep you all posted when I do but I'm not up for cracking the iriver open until after Aug 18th. I'm recording a festival and I don't want to break it so close to that date.

+T Alex.
Thanks for the update. Keep us posted & have fun at the festi.

I would remove the jumper and solder them. They should always be closed for what you're going to use them.
It also looks like the thickness will be a bit close...
Don't forget to isolate the solder points of the CF adapter - don't want to shortcircuit them.

I was just going to get a smaller jumper and trim it up. I should have an old hard drive laying around that should have what I need.

Finally got around to it
