Title: taping in the rain
Post by: Per on August 08, 2007, 05:02:33 AM
hey,
have an outdoor festival tomorrow and the weather forecast shows rain. I am going to use mk4 > nbox setup and I usually put the mk4s in my hat. Can the caps take damage if it is raining? Anyone have any good tips on how to tape even when getting hit by a bit of rain? It is stealth btw.

thanks

Your head might smell like rubbers...... but that is your business.......

Good luck,

I taped a few weeks ago in a downpour with an umbrella over my head and the mics in croakies and the recording was okay except for the pitter-patter of rain on the umbrella.

Get one of those umbrella hats and just mod it for taping in the rain.

hmm. seems like there is a good chance of not raining tomorrow, but thanks for the tips. But if it rains, can the caps be damaged by rain?

oh. and the festival is pretty harsh on umbrellas.  None allowed :-)

I got caught in the rain recently while stealthing at an outdoor festival. I had my mics (CA ST-11) clipped to the bill of my cap but managed to pull a hood up over the cap and mics. The results weren't perfect - there is the sound of rain pattering on the hood and substantial rustling sounds in places when I was trying to move the hood. I was quite unprepared and I'm sure one could do better with a bit of planning and practice. You'd want the mics buried under the hood enough to stay dry but the hood open enough to let the sound in unobstructed. Then leave it alone!

Good luck.

I would not tape in the rain with any gear I would not want to have ruined.   YMMV     8)

get a bucket style hat and tape mics to the brim.....

how hard of a rain are they expecting ?  if it is a torrential downpour then i would just leave the gear at home.  no show is worth ruining gear.

There was some extensive thread about running gear in the rain.  Search for that.  I'm to lazy to find it right now.

YES! The caps can easily get fried in the rain. I wonder how one of those umbrella hats would work?

I was told that the Schoeps capsules are water resistant by a Schoeps taper, taping in the rain. I don't have Schoeps, nor have I run them in the rain, so I can't speak from experience.

I hate taping in the rain. Fuggin' sucks! After the first night of Phish at Coney Island and moe. at the pool deck during moe.cruise 2007, I will do everything possible to avoid it. At both of those shows I was lucky enough to have the rest of my rig wrapped in heavy duty garbage bags with the mics under an umbrella. Actually, no umbrella for the moe.cruise. Luckily moe. didn't play during the driving rain, so I wrapped the mics in garbage bags. They played during the drizzle and I decided to wing it. Brilliant.  :P

I did the condom thing with my 460's last year at a festival and the sound was definetly distorted/muffled.  YMMV

Thanks for the inputs on this. Fortunately the sun was shining all day at the show, so I did not need to do something out of the ordinary. However, it would be interesting to know about the caps though if they get ruined by rain.

the schoeps will die in the rain.
