my mother-in-law wants a record player so she can listen to her records, just a basic player, any ideas? I know nothing of record players. Something easy to set-up and maintain

get her an MP3 player and transfer her scratchy old Polka albums to MP3 with this: ;D

If you buy a used table, I'd recommend replacing the cartridge to make sure you don't give your mother-in-law a bent needle that will ruin her records. Here are a few options for you on new turntables. I'd look around to see what's available locally, but here's something to look for.
$100 - Audio Technica PL-50 fully automatic w / phono pre (http://www.needledoctor.com/Audio-Technica-PL50-Fully-Automatic-Turntable-with-Switchable-Phono-Pre-amp?sc=2&category=46[s)
$150 - Denon DP-29F fully automatic w/ phono pre (http://www.needledoctor.com/Denon-DP-29F-Turntable?sc=2&category=46)
If you wanted to impress her, a Rega P1 (http://eugenehifi.com/Rega/htm/Rega_Turntables.htm) will make her records sound better than they ever have & they're easy to setup. If she loves her music, it might be money well spent ;). However, these are manual turntables with only a tonearm lifter and an on/off switch. They also require a stereo with a phono input. We sell them for $325 w/delivery included.
What kind of stereo does she have?
