Title: R09 : any blank between 2 files ?
Post by: bartos80 on September 09, 2007, 12:39:43 PM
Hello everybody,

I ordered my R09 yesterday and before receiving it I need to know if
there is any loss of recording in between 2 files created automatically if I use
a 4GB SDHC (max 2Go isn't it ?)

Sorry if this had already been asked for.

thanx

No loss whatsoever. As seamles as seamless can be.

Go for a Transcend 150x 4GB and you'll forget its inside.

Remember to check firmware version to be at least 1.20.  Newest 1.30 allows full 8 GIG seamless 2GIG or less auto file spanning (see v1.30 thread: http://taperssection.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=dc5cb19c3eae03a2a98a47d2a8b6b290&topic=90656.msg1207352#msg1207352 (http://taperssection.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=dc5cb19c3eae03a2a98a47d2a8b6b290&topic=90656.msg1207352#msg1207352))

I don't see a need for paying premium price of super-fast card for R-09 audio recording where burst speed boosted performance is not useful.

Yep.... remember the high card speeds stated are typically for burst write mode which is useful more in a camera situation.  For audio recording you are more interested in the sustained transfer rate.

Anyway... I have a old Transcend class 2 8gig card I bought when the 1.20 firmware came out.  I've been testing it with the new 1.30 firmware and have had no issues with gapless splits or write speed.

All I can say is that *I* had tested Transcend 4GB SDHC CARD (SD 2.0) - TS4GSDHC on the R-09 with SDHC support firmware/ deck formatted and DID get errors on hours of testing. Since switching to the TS4GSD150 (verified by many users) I never had an error. We had in fact included the TS4GSDHC as working well in the R-09 FAQ, but I asked lbgspam to kindly delete the note after that.

While all Transcend SD/SDHC cards ORIGINALLY worked very well in the R-09 v1.20 without unexpected error issues, earlier this year the same models of cards started failing error free operation (likely due to controller IC changes inside).   There's a thread about this in TS, and mention of this issue in my review at: http://www.sonicstudios.com/r-09revw.htm#memory (http://www.sonicstudios.com/r-09revw.htm#memory)

It has nothing to do with the card's rated speed, just so happens the higher rated (burst) speed model is using a controller implementation that is still working OK, but this might change with future Transcend production runs, as well as the less costly cards might start working OK again with v1.30 or some change in Transcend production implementation.

I didnt know about this "update" ...not having problems with the card i wasnt really up to date about it. Did this IC issue vs R09 effect both SD and SDHC Transend cards?

You're right to ask, as the only reports of file error problems were with later runs of 8 GIG SDHC Transcend using v1.20 firmware.  I'm not recalling problem reports and now realize shouldn't have mention SD type.

Thats bad..Transcend 150x seemes to have been most stable with the R-09. Glad you found the Kingston worked well then.

I have 4 of these and had 100% perfect experiences with them:
Transcend 4GB Secure Digital (SD) Flash Card Model TS4GSD150

Had a 5th, but it got crushed when someone borrowed my gear... and Transcend replaced it for free, so I am a Transcend fan!

i had trouble with transcend in my unit...i kept getting 'slow sd card' on the screen.  sandisk seems to work in my unit better...certainly not saying transcend doesnt work...just had probs.
