Hi.. T+ or +T is "karma" noted in tickets.. The more tickets you have the higher your "karma".. it's truly unimportant but fun.

To patch your going to need some sort of grey box COAX > Toslink converter which actually works well.  I'm not sure what brand/model suites the situation but someone else might be able to help fill in the blanks.

Bare minimum:

1. Mini to Mini (headphone sized plug)
2. RCA to Mini

Bonus:

1.  Toslink optical to Mini Optical (for patching out of UA5 or other preamps or D/A's with optical out)
2. Some sort of digi converter that converts coax to optical (already sugested above).

If it were me, I would get the Bonus items - Assuming that you will be getting your own pre-A/D converter at some point, you will end up using these cables anyway (well, one or the other, depending on the pre) - so, might as well use the digital cords, so you are relying on the A/D converters in the fellow tapers pre, instead of the converters in the MJB3, which many feel are significantly crappier than most you would be patching into.

But, it would be a good idea to have the regular, 'analog cables' as well, cause if the pre you are patching to already has all of the digital outs taken, better to have analog than nothing!

But I wouldn't skimp on stuff that you are going to need/want at some point anyways!

Hope my $.02 helps.

Peace-
Andrew

Bare minimum above is what you need.

I have this (I run a NJ3 too):
1) 6" long RCA>1/8" stereo mini
2) 20' long RCA>RCA
3) (2) RCA>mono 1/4" (big stereo) plug
4) (2) RCA male to male

Some SBDs will give you RCA out, some 1/4", but all will require you be more than several feet away.  By getting all above, you can run (1/4" out)>(20' RCA)>(male to male)>(6" RCA>mini)>(NJ3), or leave off the 1/4" plugs for (RCA)>(male to male)>(RCA>mini)>(NJ3).

Also, you may want to get a Toslink Optical to 1/8 Optical cable/adapter in case you get a digi out from someone's A>D convertor...  Digital Format Convertor is needed to go Coax digital>Optical digital (like to patch from your typical DAT...), though the Sony 7 Pin Optical may solve that problem, at least for patching out of sony DATs... I'm looking into that and it may be my next cable purchase...

Oade Bors. sells the Sony 7-pin Optical cables.  They have one that is a 7-pin to Optical out.  I thought this might be what I needed, but it seems the Sony DATs more than likely use the 7-pin as an input rather than as an output...

Which puts me back to square one...  Maybe I ought to get a Midiman CO2...

i have a co2 i would sell ya

but you know, that with a co2 > jb3 it isnt bit perfect? as the midiman co2 has proven not to be bit perfect when going coax > optical

Oh yeah?  I've heard of the CO2 being tempermental, but now there is proof???  I'd like to see that, once and for all - I know a few that say they have no CO2 issues...

Dont forget about XLR ... many large boards i'v patched out of only have XLR outs

i havent ever used a co2 with my jb3, as i runa wmod ua5 and have solely used it with optical outs

im not really saying anything about it being temprmental, im just saying that it isnt bit perfect goping coax > optical, and that has been proved... now if i could just remember the guys name that did the tests with the c02 > jb3.... someone chime in here

Right on, this is true...  You can make/find XLR>RCA cables...  Get a small one and use the male to males to make a long one if need be...

You should be able to buy 90% of these cables at Radio SHack:  1/8 (3.5mm) mini>RCA, 20' RCA, RCA male to male plugs, toslink optical>1/8 mini optical, coax digital...

The only thing you may need to order online is the XLR>RCA cables...

You can also order very high quality (ie, expensive) cables at KyndKables, and a million other places online...  Just Google "stereo cables".

And if you have the CO2 already, you are golden to patch and tape...

To record SBD (alone):  Run your RCA>mini out of SBD into NJ3 (no need for CO2).

To record on a chain:  Coax>CO2>Coax (for the other DATs behind you), while you use the Coax>CO2>Opt function for your NJ3.  This will also work when recording AUD chains...

To run AUD alone, well you'll need mics, etc...  But you said you ain't there yet...

Radio Shack has it also.  They make a 6' bright ass orange one.  Don't think the package says coax though.

You can pick one of these up pratically anywhere nowadays.  It looks like a fat RCA cable, with only one plug at each end (rather than 2).  Make sure it is a digital cable, it should say on the package.

Here's a quick lesson:

If you want to patch out of a DAT machines, plug your digital coax cable into the digi coax output and plug that into your CO2.  Switch the CO2 so it passes the coax dig signal as well as splitting off your optical signal.  This way, more DATs can go behind you, or even more CO2>JB3 or MD combos.  Plug the optical out of the CO2 into your Optical in on you JB3, and record (set to record with optical input).  You will need a Toslink to 1/8 mini optical cable for this.  I bought my Toslink>Toslink w/ 1/8 adapter at Radio Shack, but you can find them very cheap online.

If you want to patch out of the soundboard and there is no one else there:  figure out which plug you'll need to plug into the SBD:  RCA, 1/4", or XLR.  Use you various adapters to make your 20' RCA into a XXX SBD connection>20' RCA>1/8" miniplug.   Record using the line-in option.

I've never used the mic-in option, and I'm not sure how well it works.  You may want to investigate this.  Before I went crazy and bought a full rig last month, I was thinking of buying some Giant Squid or CSB mics to use with the mic-in...  But I got sucked into buying all these cool toys...  Its an addiction!

Good luck!

Have you done this successfully?  I mean, is anyone out there carrying around their NJB3 patching it into D8/DA-P1 chains?
