Getting a pair of 4060's and i have a pre and or bb with a r-09 or an h120, what do you think is the best options for acoustic recording? Do i need a bb or pre to push the 4060's? i think it says min 5v for the 4060's and couldn't find what the r-09 mic in is?
-
The 4060´s are high-sens(20mV).. more than 10db hotter than the 4061´s low-sens(6mV).
I´d say you don´t need an external preamp...ok, the r09 preamp is more noisy than my RH1´s pre, but for loud music a battery box is just fine.
I got my new 4060´s today with microdot connectors and the MPS6030 DPA power supply.
Already asked my DPA wholesaler in Austria to build an Y-cable(2x microdot female => 1x 3.5mm plug) for me.
They have a room filled with voltmeters and cables and are real nerds who know their business ;).

Moke,
You can get non-gold plated panel mount microdots from DPA. I think they are $20 each. As far as custom cables, Core Sound has some microdot related cables and could probably make something on request. I got some female barrells from them for something I made.
To stay on thread, if you are recording acoustic music and have access to a pre-amp...use it!

I just returned from my 1st DPA4060´s recording(indoor rock/pop show).
Used the DPA "MPS6030" power-supply(no preamp) and my iriver iHP-120 rockboxed with a recent build from last week.
SPL were varying from soft to extremly loud. I was standing about 15m in front of the right stacks and my jacket´s collar avoided noise from the back and the side ;).
I only needed +0,5dB from the internal preamp.
Sound is awesome. No normalization or amplification needed. Maybe some high-frequency boost in post.
I used the standard soft-boost-grid for high frequencies.
-
Thats some good info Arni thanks, most of my shows will be rock/metal but there are couple acoustic shows mixed in.
-
"The Police" recording in 3 days will be started with no internal gain at all 0dB ;).
The DPA4060s(20mV/Pa) are about 10-12dB hotter than the MM-HLSC-1(8mV/Pa) cardioids.
Don´t tape in front of stacks at metal shows.
NO noise at all during the silent songs with the 4060´s and the internal preamp set to 0,5dB.

arni,...
could you ask your techies about the metric thread pitch size of those microdots?
I want to build a y-cable as well, and was inquiring thru a distributo, Tyco, but they needed more information. I don't speak metric thread pitches, at all, so any help would be appreciated.
I'm looking for cable mount, or, panel mount female connectors,...
I'll work around what is available
guess I could try to get them thru DPA n.a.??
I had a pair of panel mount connectors that I just used to create an 11' extension cable, and would like to create another similar cable.

now, the techies said they can´t build such a cable for me and don´t know the metric size neither... :(

I can build you that cable I have built more then a few of them.. As for not needing a preamp for loud shows that may be true but some preamps add a really nice flavor to the audio and increase the dynamic range. But I am a bit biased... :)

you can build an y-cable for Moke and me? ;)
2x female microdot => 1 x3.5mm right angle male?
what´s the price chris?....i live in europe/austria....
the y-cable should be as short as possible.
i´d go dpa4060´s/y-cable/12v bbox with 3.5mm in- and output/recorder
thx

Are you sure about that? I've always been a little uncomfortable running my 4060s with a 9v BB. Happy to be corrected though...

I taped with my former 4061s terminated into a 3.5mm single-plug and the 12V bbox from SP with great results.

Interesting. I always fancied a physically smaller BB but thought that it was safer to go for a 9v model because the DPA mics seemed to be designed for 5v. Maybe I'll give one a try next time I order someting from Sound Pros...

the keychain-bbox from SP called "SP-SPSB-9"(in my sig) is not listed anymore as the supplier can´t deliver the box...ask chriscarfagno@soundprofessionals.com when it´ll be in stock again.
the battery should last for 50 hours.
here a pics what it looks like:

Nice, like it a lot.
And cheers for the DPA BB info, Moke.
