Title: DAT repair other than Pro Digital?
Post by: Swampy on September 17, 2007, 04:33:34 PM
So someone gave me a DAT that locks to spdif, rewinds, fast forwards, but just won't play. I know Pro Dig does good work, but I've had two less than great experiences with them as far as customer service goes (One, I specifically asked for a quote before a repair and instead they just repaired and told me the charge afterwards, and a second time, a studio I worked at sent them an ADAT and never heard back from them in all the time I worked there). So I'm wondering if there are any other reliable DAT repair services out there... Thanks!

what exactly is the problemo, swamp?  other than "it doesn't play".  Does the motor not turn the tape in play?  Or is tape moving, but no signal, etc?

Its hard to tell. The tape loads in horizontally, so its hard to hear if the motors are moving when it goes into play. No levels...

Okay, I've found that the motors do sound like they are moving when it goes into play, just no levels/sound...

Depending on the model, Bill Drucklieb at Cinemasonics may do this kind of work.  www.cinemasonics.com

Bill has always done great work for me in reasonable time and at a good price.

On a related topic,  i have a D8 that i had serviced last year by pro digital. I paid a bit over 100 bucks to have it aligned and cleaned.

It worked great for a few tapings but now whenever i adjust the volume or turn on the light or make any adjustment while it's recording i get static. Can anyone offer any insight of what might be wrong with it.  I don't use it that much as my primary recorder is the MT.

Thanks for any info offered.

I also don't want to use Pro Digital again but wondering if it's worth it to fix my M1. After 5 years of use suddenly it just unloads and the light powers off whenever I try to use it. It also seems to suck a bit more juice the last few years than it used to. Just seems "dead" now.
