Title: Peluso P2 stereo mic
Post by: Nick's Picks on September 18, 2007, 02:00:48 PM
Ok folks...here it is.
:)

initial thoughts:
awesome packaging.  kick ass metal briefcase (fat)
well built *everything* , from the power supply to the cable to the beautiful mic itself (polished chrome trim over brushed brass/aluminum).
Its slightly smaller than the LSD2.  Maybe as much as 3/4th its size.
the shock mount is OUTRAGEOUSLY MASSIVE.  I mean monsterous!, but it is nice, and has little thumb screws to make sure the mic is held securely.
Although, I have other LD shockmounts that fit it nice and tight...and I would probably them in place of the stock behemoth.

toggle switches (rather large, imo) on the front select the patterns (omni, card and 8).  -10db pad on the back.
NO HPF !!!

the upper capsule rotates 90deg in one direction.
no XY at exagerated angles here.  But, that's fine w/me.  the c422 and 426 were the same way.
capsules are labled A and B.  I believe A is the top, and right channel.  I'll dig in the manual and verify.  and of course....the manual doesn't specify.

the cable...
20' w/a very nice nylon woven cover.  Very slick looking.  Hosa XLRs, 5pin on *each end*.
so a custom 5pin > 2x XLR female cable is needed to run this w/a phantom providing preamp.
the power supply is AC, and has 5pin in and 2x XLR output.
I'm currently building a new HYDRA cable for it.  this will be something that bypasses the stock cable entirely.

some pics....
I threw in one of my old (tight fitting) LSD2 shockmount (LD generic) so you could get an idea of its size.

I'll get Joe over here w/his LSD2 so we can take some pics side by side, and maybe do a stereo test.
Otherwise, Saturday is Garaj Mahal, and I'll be sure to pull something nice on stage (if they still allow it).
maybe even a comp if Joe goes.

Good stuff Nick! Can't wait to hear it in action.

That sure is one beefy shockmount!

I swear, you could drive over it.
its like the V2 of shockmounts.

so can this be run without the power supply in the chain?
Title: Re: Peluso P2 stereo mic
Post by: Nick's Picks on September 18, 2007, 03:32:36 PM
yes.
but it looses some SPL ability, which appears to be around 137db (by memory).  the manual states it has 147db ability with the -10db pad engaged.
I'm guessing that the pad will need to be run when using phantom from an outboard source.

that will come in handy if you are recording jet planes or bombs exploding.

Thank you Nick! ;D

- I might have misunderstood John but I thought he told me that you can apply p48 to the box > mic sans AC power...is this not right?
- windscreen ideas?

don't quote me, Nick would know better, but I believe it was around $1600

$1350 (cash), $1399 (credit) is what I got from soundpure last week.

there ya go.
the power module has one AC input, the 5pin input and then 2xXLRf output.
you couldnt add phantom to it from any source.  so its completely "nixed" from the mix for field recording.

well, suppose the spl is dropped down to 120db when running phantom.
I'd be all over that -10db pad.

...by the specs it says it's 42mm round and my C422 is 41mm so there is a possible source for a basic windscreen solution. Now put that 42mm next to the 53mm of the LSD2 and that is a might less donkey-dickish. I wish Peluso made them in black like your old LSD2 was.

Nick was it hard painting yours black? Is this something I can do myself?

Keep in mind my LSD2 in in a fedex truck somewhere. Haven't laid my hands on it yet. But I know I'd like it black.

I remember seeing pics of yours (pretty sure) but a search turned up none.

Good luck with that,  Dude.  Something about Fedex and LSD2's doesn't mix.   ::)  They delivered mine to the wrong place and wouldn't go find it.  They kept saying "we left it next to the side door". I said "But I don't have a side door".   :hmmm:  Finally, after 2 weeks, I decided to start knocking on doors 4 miles from my house where I thought Fedex might have left it.  Sure enough, I finally got it back. ;D  The night after the big Mule show! Dooh!

But you're a "kind guy", so they won't lose yours.

taking the LSD apart is easy.
a couple of screws and the whole capsule assembly pulls right out.
that leaves you w/the bottom metal part, which you can gaff, spray paint (several coats), have powder coated (as I did eventually).
I tried to take the upper assembly apart too to get the rest of the metal, but only ended up shorting out a capsule in the long run.

stop laughing Mr. Church (who always comments on my dangerous lack of knowledge..in a good way).

hmmm, custom painting the LSD2...neat idea. I think tie-dye might be appropriate for a mic with this namesake.
check out the Heil line...a percentage of the sales goes to fighting breast cancer.

I had the pleasure of camping with John Peluso at Spring Strawberry this year.
He's my band's guitarist step dad. He brought the P2 along with a pair of
small diapgram tube mics (yes, SD tube!). I tried out the P2 with my korg-mr1000
to record some campground picks. I got pretty good results.

I own an LSD2 and I will agree, the first thing you notice with the P2 is it just OOZES QUALITY
over the LSD2. It solid nickel, heavy, just feels awesome. The included accessories
as Nick pointed out are all top notch.

The included ac powered 48v phantom power supply, according to John, gives the mic more
overhead. It's not needed (I doubt field tapers will try and use it), but the
mic works just fine w/o it as far as I can tell. My mr1000 had no problems powering it.

Sound results are pretty good. I don't have apples to apples comparison with an LSD2,
but I'm sure it's at least as good. If you use the included power supply, I'm sure it's even better.

John and Mary Peluso are really nice folks, it was great camping with them. John is just
crazy nuts about mic tech in general, he LOVES talking about it and will just talk about
it all day. John was nice enough to give his step-son the P2 and tube mics, so I may get a chance
to borrow them sometime in the future.

Looking forward to hearing more reports on this very exciting mic!

familiar case.

I got to put the P2 in a common taper setup for the first time last night.  I was in a good location in a decent venue that can (and usually) sounds a bit boomy and can suffer from echo.  Cavernous vaudeville era theater.  the Orpheum, for those familiar.

Any way.
I hung the P2 upside down over the mezzane rail and ran it in cardioid mode at 90deg.
Quite impressive results, I must say.
It sounds absolutely "Peluso".  And if he was shooting for the sm69 sound, I think he must be close.  It totally shares that lush neumann splashy sound.  Super thick mid-range.  Some folks will likely say the mic is muddy sounding.  Its just really fat in the mid rage.  Meaty.  the high end is wicked smooth, like the pencil condensers.
More thoughts later.

Huh, on Peluso and SoundPure sites they have dropped the "2" in P2...it's now the Peluso P Stereo. Did this just happen?
