Title: Anyway to retrieve deleted files on a computer?
Post by: nedstruzz on September 22, 2007, 05:33:23 PM
I just accidentally moved a 2 gig file to my recycle bin and am trying to get it back.  I thought I read somewhere that files sent to the recycling bin are actually saved somewhere for a short period before actually being purged.

Strange thing is that I didn't empty my recycle bin but the file is gone anyway?

Any chance this can be salvaged?

click on the recycling bin icon and it will open like a regular floder.  right click on the file and select "restore".

When I placed the file into the recycling bin it automatically disappeared? I know this sometimes happens with large files.  Smaller files that are placed in the recycle bin show as an icon and can be restored but this one just simply disappeared altogether.

Larger files are deleted, but it should have gave you a warning "file is too large, do you want to.."  at least it does with me, mine doesn't delete a file unless it's 4 gigs i believe.

The file is still there.  The used to be renamed to "?ldname.oldextension".  There are various undelete packages out there qwhihc can retrieve it.  But, write no new files and do not defrag!  The best one, I forget its name, has to do with photo restoring and is free.  Try Tucows or some other freeware site.  It is worth a try.

Cheers

Don't do anything else on that computer. Turn it off. Get access to another computer, and use it to download <http://ntfsundelete.com/downloads/ntfsundelete.iso> burn that iso to a CD (this is a CD image, so look for a "load/open CD image" or "Burn CD image" option on your CD burning software). Boot the computer with the "lost" file from the CD and if at all possible, recover to a different (external?) drive. Good luck!
