Title: Warning: watch those levels!
Post by: jmz93 on September 23, 2007, 01:55:54 PM
I'm so mad at myself right now!

I taped Rush last night, from row 21 on the floor.
Gear: SP-MC-4's, ST9100 preamp, silver cable, R-09 at 24/48.

Amazing show!

I get up this morning to discover that despite what I thought were conservative settings, preamp only half-way up and
high-spl switch in, R-09 set to level 8 ... that everything brick walled! So, everything distorts,
but I can hear just enough of the vocals and stereo image to know that, had things not overloaded, I would have ad an excellent audience recording!

All I can think is that in my haste and trying to be stealthy, I plugged into the R-09's mic in, instead of line in.  Otherwise, I don't know why
things were captured so hot.

So ... just had to vent. Thanks for reading.

Anybody else capture this show, or any of the other Ontaro Canada dates this week?

Signed,
very frustrated, and won't let this happen for John McLaughlin in October!

Somehow I doubt John McLaughlin will be as loud or bass heavy as Rush

*LOL* Good call. :)

Not only that, I have 15th row floor, dead center, in an old concert hall with excellent
acoustics. I'm hoping to run DIN. *crossing fingers*

it should not have happened, tape the mic input so no access to avoid mix up again.
i hope you find another source for listening.

save the file still, maby a matrix with your mix very low just for punch works great.

good luck next captures.

Never used "mic in" for a loud concert.  I did that once and my Steve Morse Band/Dixie Dregs brickwalled.   ;D Never again!

I feel for you. I made the same error at a festival show a few years ago. Brickwalling so bad even I can't enjoy listening to it... Killer sets from The Cult, Black Crowes and Aerosmith that day.  :'( Luckily, there were other tapers, and I may still get my hands on thse sets (got the crowes already). Good luck with the next show, and I hope another taper got your show for you.
