Title: MG> M148>V3 vs. MG>7XX?
Post by: Tony B on October 02, 2007, 07:03:16 PM
I've totally entered waffling-mode, and have no idea what I'm doing anymore.

I don't even know what good music sounds like.

If you're willing, link me with the above lineage(s), so I can shake the sand out of my vagina and do something.

That, or hook me up with some good music. My JB3 deaths have me a bit out of sorts......

Yeah...I know..  - T for fluffing a sale in an unrelated thread.   But..... It is a nice sounding cap for dirt cheap.

Thanks! I suppose that's what the archive is for.....

Re: the hyper cap, Lord knows I'd be down, my friend....but if that 250 could go toward a solid bit bucket, well, that's where my money will be sent; 'cause right now I'm running only Air, and the levels aren't all that cool.

why are the choices between the m148 > V3 or the straight SD 7xx ??
why not run MG > V3?  that's a kick-ass combo :)
plenty of MG > V3 tapes here:

Well, that's what I've been doing, and I do dig it, but I've been thinking about going to the 24/48, if I'm going to get another recorder. And it seems like everyone and their mother is going the all-in-one route, so I wanted to see what it sounded like (it sounded as though Bean had a good experience with the MG>722 combo). On the flip side, I love my V3, and the MG>148>V3 fluffing has me a little kerfuffled.....

Thanks for the links though, brah!

Have you considered MG>M148>MME? You could grab a Mini Me and M148 for less than a 722, and IMHO the A/D converter in the MME is better than the V3. (Grace Design fans don't kill me, I prefer the V3's pre)

Hmmm..never run a MME....what's the AD on it compared to the V3? I always liked the V3 for the fact that it was "clean," or "transparent" or whatever you want to call it. I'm not averse to coloration in the sound at this point...hell, I'm tabla rosa at this point.

What's your budget & what's your goal for capture, i.e. 16bit or 24bit?

I ran M148 > V3 behind my JW Mod 460's for quite a while and loved the sound.  That being said, I don't miss hauling the brick around at all.  I slimmed the bag down considerably and am loving it.

i think that the A/D in the v3 and 722 are pretty similar

is money a significant issue here? mg>148>722 would be titties but more expensive.

also MG > psp2 combo is very nice since they are so rare you could go aerco mp2 route and have a pretty similar sound and save some ching on the m148

like gumbino said m148>v3>recorder is a lot of shit to haul around and more links in the chain that can go wrong IME.

do you have a recorder in mind aside from the 722?

Well said, Mikey.  That's where I was going with my questions.

Danka for the input gentlemen.

I don't really have a catch-all idea for a recorder, but 24 bit would be nice. Now, I could pick up a Microtrack and yes, that'd be cool, but for the money I put down on that, well.........I could upgrade, and that's where the rub really is, I guess.

Bottom line, if I'm going to get a new recorder, then I'd prefer 24/48. However, I'm wondering if my monies would be better funneled into a MG>148>V3>? combo or a straight up MG>7XX combo.

As I think I've made plain, I'm adrift here, and I'm not a rich man. Something has to give (i.e., if I go the 148 route, I need to sell a ton of shit to make it happen. Or, if I go the 722 route, I still need to sell a ton of shit to make it happen). Bottom line, I'm still 1K down from where I need to be, price-wise, and I know this. I'm just wondering what sounds better, or looking for options (Props to the 148>MME idea!)

I have a number of MG mv692/m94 > 722 and I could send you a few to listen to...

Honestly, I'm not a fan of anything direct into the 722, but that's just my preference.  I think that the 722 has a world-class A/D with a so-so to bad preamp in it.  If you are looking for transparent, Gefell > V2 > 722 would probably be what you are looking for.  On the other end of the spectrum, Gefell > 148 > MiniMe would be extremely colored (more to my liking).  It is individual preference.  One problem is that not too many people run Gefells so finding comparison recordings with multiple gear configurations is difficult.  Good luck!

Tony why not just keep the gear you have and buy a microtracker, they are going for less than 200 these days, problem solved and for cheap!

I agree. I run M300>V3>MT and am happy. I am planning to send the V3 in to Oade for the ACM mod one of these days though.

I'm not sure I would run a "warm" pre behind the MGs unless you were running the hypers.
the MGs have a fat low-end as is.

when I ran the 200s, I tried the MP2, MiniMe, DMIC-20, V3 and straight into a DA-P1.
IMO, the MP2 over-accentuated the low end of the MGs as did the MiniMe. the DMIC added too much "presence" to them, ie, gave them a brittle high-end and a grainy low. the V3 was great to my ears. straight into the DA-P1 was my second fav of the group.

if I were to do everything over again:
24bit - 200s> V2> 722
16bit - 200s> V2> modSBM1//MiniMe> dat

I would get the 702/722 and be DONE with it. If you come across some money, you could always add a v2 into the mix. If I were running Gefell's, Id be running MG>7xx or MG>V2/3>7xx :) As always, YMMV :)

And dont be scared of teh folks who dont like the 7xx's preamps ;) They most likely ahve never ran a 7xx unit and dont personally know for themselves :) The preamps in the 722 are my DEFINITE FAVORITE for the 480's and they aint too shabby for the MBHO's either ;D I know this doesnt really help your question, but I have ran 480>DMIC-20/Sonosax/V2/V3 and have heard just about every 480>pre/adc combo there humanly is possible and I MUCH prefer the 480>722 sound. The preamps are top-notch and sound PHENOM with a neutral mic IMO. I would bet you would be one happy tapir with the MG>722 sound :) If you arent, sell the MG's and get 480's and you'll be happy then ;D

I only ran MG200>722 for one set and MG210>722 for one set at moedown 2006(Thanks Jason!) but love the combo FWIW. In fact, I plan on having MG 200/210's in my mic arsenal within a year or so hopefully and guess what I'll be running them into? Thats right, a 722, that is until I can find/afford another V2 :)

I too plan on having MG 200s in my mic arsenal within a year or so, very likely in Spring 2008 - I LOVE the sound  of the Gefells that I'm running straight into the 722 now and I'll vary that combo with a mytek 192 > Oade ACM mod V3 or Portico 5012 > 722 until I hear what I like...  I'll also try the same options with the MG 200s.

If you would like to coordinate with me sometime here in The Twin Cities we could run your Gefells:

1) straight into my 722 -
2) with your V3 into my 722 -
3) with my Oade ACM mod V3 into my 722 -

I'd love to do an A/B with your MGs >  our V3s > 722.

 :)
