Title: Recording at festivals?
Post by: jasonw on October 09, 2007, 12:46:52 AM
I have Franken naks usually running NOS indoors.  What about outside?  Never recorded at a big festival....what do you think?

If you tell us what you are recording and where you will be standing and any other pertinent info maybe we can help.  "Outside" does not describe enough.   8)

Sorry.  I am going to be at The Echo Project.  Not sure how they will have things set up but I am sure it will be similar to bonnaroo.

if you're outdoors with no roof over you at all then a wide stereo pattern can sound spectacular. with no hard reflective surfaces you can capture a really BIG soundstage with something like NOS. If you have omni's give those a shot.

Spaced omnis - two to three feet apart - are good, but not as precise in localising sound sources as cards.  But the do give the ambiance and "warmth."  The distance ratio of omnis vs cards is1 to 1.7.  A card hears at 1.7 what an omni hears at 1.  I understand cards can also be run as a spaced pair, like omnis, if you are pointed at the stacks.  If you can, try as many patterns as you can on the opening act.  Otherwise do what we all do, wing it!   Good luck.  8)
