Title: stereo mini >> (2) rca cable question
Post by: Jimna on October 16, 2007, 10:09:08 AM
im in the process of making a new arsenal of my own line of silver cables, im calling the "Phatman Silver Series".  my question is on what the pin assignments would be to make a 1/8 stereo>rca's, and whether or not i can use this cable (millispec silver) to even make this?

this is a major PIA making all these, i gotta give gumbino, nick, and ect. credit on their work.  these arent a walk in the park to do, not mention that till you get all the materials together the savings isnt far from not worth it for the work involved compared to just getting a set of hydra/hi ho's/ect.  and then to have the craftsmanship they provide.....well kudos gentleman.   :clapping:

on a plus note, when im done im gonna have all silver cabling in the field for ANY application. ;D

 thanks again!

RCA - Tip +, Sleeve ground
1/8" - Tip +, Ring -, Sleeve ground

so...you just tie the grounds and make the other connections

you'll want to run two pieces of cable for this.
designate one lead as "HOT".  snip the other.  the braided shield is your ground.

one hot wire from one cable makes one channel of the 3.5mm (say, the tip)
and the other makes the 2nd channel (ring).

you'll need to twist both of the shields from each cable together for the 3.5mm end.
those are tight fitting...., you'll see.
:-)
have fun!

What I've done in the past, instead of using two cables, is use a piece of starquad or some cable with 4 conductors & a shield.

Open up the cable far enough to get a nice length split on the RCA ends.  Use one pair of the quad for + and the other pair for the -.  Just split out the shield so some goes to each RCA.  Makes for a much cleaner and easier to deal with 3.5mm end.

Stick some heatshrink over each RCA lead and then another piece where they meet and it will look very finished.

Good luck.
