Hey cablers of the board.
I just got some heady (brah).... silver 20g 4 wire cable from the ebay.
My goal is to make a 4 channel "snake" for my 4 channel set up By running 8 wire strands through one central core.
--Is grounding just to the shield alone good enough?
--What would happen if I did not ground at all?
advices???

Always use separate grounds.. An overall ground in a snake cable is meant as a drain wire and not really a audio ground.. Each pair should have a ground via foil or better yet braided.. Then you might have an overall braided shielded wire that should only be connected at the preamp end of a Microphone snake.
But audio ground must be connected to both sides because you need it for phantom power And for noise immunity.

like the teflon shielding that comes with the milspec? or a wire braid shield for each signal?

Each pair must have its own shield that connects from one side of the XLR on your snake to the other.. If you have a secondary overall shield you can ( because your using them with mics ) connect the input * ie preamp side * of the shield to ground. But the mic side of the ( over all shield ) can be floating.. I hope this make sense.. Hey why dont you take a picture of the cable you want to use? It might make things simple.
