Title: white noise with R-09
Post by: ouzo on October 17, 2007, 12:07:53 PM
Hi,

a couple of days I taped a Metal show using a R-09.

I used SP-CMC-10 at the line in and low mic gain, AGC off, Low cut off.

I have about 5 years experience in taping concerts with TCD-D100. It mostly came out fine.

With the R-09 I got white noise all over the recording.

What's wrong? Did I use the wrong setting? Did I use the wrong SD-CArd which was a HAMA 2GB Highspeed?

Any suggestions?

With or without a battery box?

I used SP-SPSB-2B.

No roll-off.

Did you test at home before the show?

Does your r09 record  with the internal mics?

Have you ever made a recording on the r09?

Yes I made 2 live recordings with SP-CMC-10 and battery box which were fine.

In addition I tested the internal mics which was fine, too

The recordings I made with AGC on. Might this be the reason?

I have only heard bad things about the AGC.  So that may be the problem.

Freelunch,

I got the problem with AGC off  ???

While it's on the recording was fine.

Hi Ralf,

Don't know if you remember me or not (Simon_LDT on DIME). We did a trade a while back. Your Saxon recordings are excellent.

Anyways, just some advice - Never use AGC. It makes the recordings real bad (pumping levels). Not sure what this noise is though, you got any samples so we can hear it?

Cheers,
Simon.

Hi Simon,

of course I remember you. What about another CD-R trade. Send me an e-mail  :)

Attached for you and all others you'll find a sample of Queensryche Langen; Germany 2007

This recording has been made with AGC off, manually leveled.

You'll find "easily" the noise I'm talking about.

I'd look but I don't have an ogg decoder.  A small lossless sample is usually best.

...and here are some seconds in WAV-format

Do you get it when recording at home?

I made tests eighter with or without ACG at home. No noise at all.

I didn't format the card I used for Queensryche Langen by using the R-09. Could this be the cause?

I really doubt drive formatting could impact this. I also don't think the card will have anything to do with it unless it has a very unusual electrical defect that causes interference.

While I wouldn't suggest any extensive wiggling of the delicate r09 input jack, maybe you have a cable or jack issue that only acts up when under pressure, etc.

If it's the same problem that I had in this thread then it's the SD card.

I spoke to an engineer at Edirol and he said that high speed SD cards do not work in the R-09. You need an SDHC card.

Hi,

thanks for the feedback.

Last night I taped another show using an TECHNAXX Hyperspeed 4GB, which isn't high tech rather midrange (prizewise). Nevertheless I hadn't any problems.
