Title: Need a new DVD burner - need advice
Post by: Chuck on October 17, 2007, 07:52:45 PM
What's the best price/ performance internal DVD burner these days? My old Plextor 4x is finally giving up the ghost.
I need one for making back-ups of my recordings and archiving data.

I think I've got two NEC's which were less than $50 each and have been great for the last 1-2 years. I put a $40 burner(can't remember the brand) in my GF's computer and it's worked fine. I see some out there for a lot more money but I've been satisfied with these so far.

Lite-On.  They can usually be had for between $30 - $40 on newegg.com

I got a Lite-on at Walmart last week for about $42.

I normally go to www.newegg.com also, but I was already there at the evil empire.

I had a NEC 3520 and it lasted a solid two and half years.  then it stopped reading most disc.  I burnt well over 1000 disc so it came as no surprise.  I now have a LG I got for about $30 on newegg and it's been a solid drive so far.  honestly at $30 a drive I don't mind replacing every few years if need be.  that is if it was abused the way I abused the NEC.

Pioneer 112D is what I have. Only had it for 6 months but its been SOLID. Never failed a burn and reads all discs I put in it.

Before that I had a Philips drive, that lasted nearly 3 years and is still going strong. I only got the Pioneer because I felt the Philips was getting too old and wanted a fresh drive.

I've got 4 NEC 4551 (firmware upgraded from 3550), i dont need em all. I can sell you one for $25 shipped. Theyre great drives, I burn 2 discs at a time in nero no problem.

I want to get two black drives for the new machine im building. these are beige, they work perfectly
