Anyone ever build there own clamp?
I have a metal working shop at my disposal and was thinking I might have a go at it...

For stand- or balcony-clamping, I think it's a better investment of (my) time and money to just buy a Bogen SuperClamp and WindTech "C" Type clamp. 'Course, for a huge-jawed clamp, DIY seems the way to go, as I don't know of reasonably priced commercially available clamps with huge jaws. Show us the results when you're done! :)

Here is one I made, specifically for this post at this venue... although I have used it elsewhere. No precision machining, just stock hardware pieces welded and screwed together. I'll be using it again tonight. It's ugly, but effective. http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,83662.0.html
I've been thinking about a DIY super clamp, specifically to wrap around balcony railing in the 1.5-2.5" range. Ideally I would want to hang an LSD2 out about 3 feet. That's a lot of moment weight so it would have to really grip the rail. Still at the thinking stage. I'm not sure if it is best to go with "V" jaws, or self tightening cam action like a pipe wrench. I want to respect the venue and not leave marks on their railing, so I'm thinking grippy rubber on the jaws.
Yeah, I know I can buy what I need for $50, but that's too easy. ;D God give us engineering degrees and welders so we can build shit.

Thanks for the responses. Some really good ideas there. I want something most likely for stand and railing clamping. Im sure I can rig something up...
Will post pictures when I'm done, right now though I am only in the thought stages of this project...

I find that the Bogen Quick Release C-clamp will do the job in just about any normal situation. Maybe not an 8" x 8" pole, but any two or three inch post or rail, far wider than the superclamp. I use the C-clamp to clamp to the post or rail, the extension arm is attached to that and connected to the superclamp attached to the stand. The C-clamp is about as versatile as any clamp can get, with its own extension arm, and screw built in, so you can just attach a t-bar with any adapter.

I'm a little puzzled by that pic...the mic preamps in the Sound Devices 700 series not good enough for you? :o

this is especially true if you're running full body mics and a heavier tbar. the bogen super clamp works better for me because of the weight of the full bodies and using a tbar, most other clamps i tried dont stay secure. If you're just running some caps, there are plenty more inexpensive options
