Title: SVU-1 Question
Post by: Cheesecadet on October 23, 2007, 06:27:20 PM
How are most of you using your SVU-1?  Directly out of your preamp...or out of your recording device?

For those Dmod UA-5 users out there...do any of you run it out of the RCA outs?

Advantage/Disadvantages from going out of the preamp as opposed to the line out/headphone out on your recording device?

Just curious because i did not see any levels when i ran mine out of the RCA outs on the back of my unit.  I used it for the first time at a daytime show and was not able to get it really dark to see if there were levels showing or not...so i thought I would pose the above question.

The big advantage to running out of your deck is that you know you have no recording if you have no meters. If you are out of the pre and the deck dies, you'll still have pretty blinking lights, but no recording.

The big drawback running out of the UA-5 is that all the analog outs are controlled by the headphone volume knob. Change the knob and the meters are no longer accurate.

FWIW I run mine off my JB3. That also made the initial calibration easier too. I just recorded a 3db constant tone with cool edit then put that file on the jb3.

i too use the jb3 line out over the ua5

if using the rca or any headphone jack you just want to be sure that the output volume is the same all the time, 100% is the easiest of course

even if you decide to run it on the ua5 with the vo;lume set to the same spot ALL the time
you can use that method to calibrate the svu

I learned something while doing this. Dogs don't like the sound too much.  ;D If you have a pouch, be a good owner and put them outside or in the car!!!

Thanks for the thread.
