I recently bought a Zoom H4 for recording shows but the stand i have isnt tall enough. What stands would yall recomend for this unit? Help? This friday i want to record my first Ratdog show @ Hampton Beach.

what mics are you using?
-
manfrotto stands are awesome!
-
Are you running external mics or the built-in? If using the built-in, does the H4 have threads for attaching to a stand?

Im using the internal mics (gonna try these out first) and it has threads but its smaller then my mic stand theads. So i dunno if i need an adaptor or if theres a different stand with the smaller threads. THe threads are identical to whats on a digital camera to put it on a tripod. or what a cam corder uses too.

These are the two lightweights that I have:
11' you can go to home depot and buy rubber feet covers so that it won't slip.

6.5'

with either of these options make sure your have a 3/8 to 5/8 adapter for the top, so that it will accomodate US threading

Since the Zoom has the same threads as a digicam, you need 1/4-20, not 3/8 or 5/8 which mic clips use.

Some of the Bogen stands ship with a combo 5/8" stud and 1/4" male thread, while I've seen others ship with just the 5/8" stud. If the former, I bet the H2 will thread directly onto the 1/4" male thread (just a guess).
If not, I like the Bogen Rapid Adapters:
This one may adapt from the 5/8" stud to 1/4"-20 on the H2: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5360-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_3105_5_8_Stud_to_1_4_20_.html
This one would require a 3/8" > 5/8" adapter that NOLAfishwater mentions, in order to secure the adapter you linked to at zzsounds:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5357-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_3102_5_8_Stud_to_3_8_.html
-
while you could opt for the rapid adapters because of how quick you can mount your rig, they are heavier than just carrying around something like this 3/8 to 1/4 adapter:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5588-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_3358_3_8_Euro_to_1_4_20_.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5588-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_3358_3_8_Euro_to_1_4_20_.html)

The extra (literally) 3 oz of weight is worth the ease of setup, IMO. :)

Honestly, that mount looks like what you want, since you will be able to aim your recorder. Why wouldn' you order it from them if they are in stock. The other adapters will not allow you to aim the recorder since they don't have a ball and socket hinge. Just something to think about.

Yeah, the ball and socket flexibility is definitely slick for his purposes. Still need a way to secure the adapter to the stand, though....that's where the other adapters come into play.
-
If he buys the ball and socket mount, it looks like it comes with the bonus 3/8 to 5/8 adapter that would fit either of the two manfrotto stands that I had mentioned.

Whoops, didn't see the 3373 has a 3/8" tip these days (mine doesn't). Per B&H, the 3336 has only a 5/8" stud tip, so he'd need the rapid adapter with 3/8" tip.
Damnit, I get all confused when Bogen / Manfrotto keeps changing around the tips on their stands!

How do you work the Zoom when it's up on a stand? Or do you hit record, set the levels, then raise it up? Or do you leave it at 4'? Or do you bring a ladder? Or do you have pointy stick and a mirror? Remote control? Magic? I need to know!!

LOL i plan on watchin to the levels when the band first starts to jam and make sure im under 0 then put it on the stand and raise it. Just hold the unit upside down and towards the stage and you can see the meters once you find the sweet spot your set. So i have noise and shit during the first 60 secs thats all good as long as i get the opener :-)

Hey insthedark, I have a stand from the Amvona store on EBay that I use all the time that's probably 13', really solid, and has held up just fine that has 1/4" thead biult into the top of it. It was something like $35 shipped.
-
I have a 7' amnova stand with a 1/4-20 thread on top. I'm not using it for the next couple of weeks. I'm in MA - west (work) and south (home) of Boston. I'd lend you the stand if you want. Or they are ebay for < $15 shipped. PM me or email me if interested.
