Title: on stage - stage lip configuration
Post by: j5brock on October 26, 2007, 10:40:00 PM
Local jam band (drummer, electric guitar, bass, acoustic electric) wants me to record so they can post their first show on LMA.. They play at both a small local club with decent sound and a small outdoor stage.. I can setup anywhere and was thinking split subcards stage lip or the same on stage.. any suggestions would be welcome - as I am much more accustomed to FOB from your seat taping.. Thanks

Jeff

I've had great results with subcards 180º with the caps about 10"-11" apart, onstage.

Any wide pattern is good onstage, NOS or even ORTF with cards or subcards are pretty consistent.  I'd stay away from omni's onstage altogether (YMMV).  What JTL is describing is a variation of the "Healy Method" which definitely works well for onstage stuff.  Depending on where the drummer is, set up to one side of him, and make sure not to be in the line of fire of a searing guitar amp or a distorted, noisy monitor wedge.  Your goal here is to create a nice balance of intruments by using your ears for strategic placement of mics, so make sure that the band actually sounds good onstage before you go recording them  ;D

vocals? you'll want to be near a monitor to pick them up

the only three real perils in on-stage taping would be:

people talking directly into your mics because of their proximity to the people in attendance
mic'ing too close to an instrument such as drums so you do not have even representation of the band
not picking up amplified vocals which are lost because the sound from the monitors bypasses the mics

barring these problems, close mic'ing will almost always produce great recordings, certainly better than the back of the room in most situations

if you can avoid those three issues it is definitely the way to go

wide angle subs sounds good.

Cards XY also works well IMHO, XY helps reduce some of the exaggerated separation you get on playback when running true ORTF with cards onstage. I would think subcards would be less subject to this due to the wider pickup angle.

Thanks.. about a third of their music has vocals - So - I need to find out how and where they are included in the monitors to make sure I can pick them up.. If they are not included in the stage mix..then I guess I am better off pulling off the PA.

they will be included in the stage mix and probably very prominently.

for an example of a singer who cannot hear him or herself in the monitors see any Grateful Dead with Donna :P

have fun

hey
I would run Cards 110°ORTF onstage
no one mentioned
Split omnis
I would favor
Spaced Omnis on stage
not too wied about 8' or so...

if ther eare vocals
you might want to run back a bit say 15 to 20' from stage to pick up some mains
monitor vox are not always "wet"  or with effects
for that matter run spaced omins about 10- 15 feet from stage

stage sound is key in the mix

but
if there are vox you'll want to pick up some PA

usually I run ORTF onstage
+ the house PA  (Soundboard) to 4-track
and  the do a post show matrix

this is best of both worlds

omnis split 3 to 6 feet
