I just scored a pair of these for $250.
I know they retail around twice that. I've never heard them, but have liked the AT sound in the past.
comments ?
am I a sucker, or lucky?
they are middle of the line for AT. not bad mics at all, but not their flagship mics either.
pair for $250 sounds fair to me.
what is their flagship SD condenser ?
I thought this was it...modular caps..etc.

I'm pretty sure you are correct Nick. I had a pair of AT4051a and 4053a (hypers) and from what I know they are top of the line from AT. I only sold them to go the active route. Excellent mics imo, and I think you got a killer deal.

edit: do your mics actually say AT4051 or AT4051a on them? there are two editions out there...

phil show with AT4051a
i believe they are the older, original 4051.
maybe not modular?
no biggie. I only run cards any way.
IIRC, the 4051 is not an interchangable capsule. The 4051a, however, is.
AT's flagship mic is the 4060....although, it is a large diaphram mic, not a small.
right, their multi-pattern LD. nice mic.
as for SDs, though, this is their best.
bummer on the non interchangeable..., I can't find any info on this vs the "a" revision on the web.
like I said, I only run cards any way.
these will be nice spares.
yeah, Nick, looks like you got a very nice deal. I often check ebay for 4041s/4051s looking for a deal. Bummer you didn't get the 4051a's, but it's still a good deal IMO. I was going to buy someone's 4051s here (Jnorman maybe??) a while back but the buyer decided to hold on to 'em. Underrated mics IMO.
turns out..., this might be too good to be true after all.
seems like the same seller is also negotiating with Tim..who has all ready secured a MO for them.
looks like we's bein' plaid!
whatever ends up happening i'm still about 99% sure caps are interchangeable no matter the version (i.e. 4051 or 4051a)

for what it is worth, i really like the 4051s. i have owned pairs of schoeps cmc64s, DPA 4011s, akg c480s and c460s, km184s, and many others, and the 4051s are often my first choice for certain appplications in the studio. i just recorded a new CD for a local pianist (performing on a 7'4" bosendorfer grand) with a piar of 4051s, and it is spectacular.
Well looks like someone got an excellent score, anyway!
And I agree these are AT's top of the line SD condensors, definitely not designed to be a middle of the road product for them. From what I've heard of these, they are nice mics, underrated in our taping circles.
I ran their next step down, the AT4041's, for a year or so before switching to Neumann km184s. I really liked the 4041s and made a lot of good tapes with them. I always thought they should've been used a lot more in taping circles, esp as a lower cost nice mic (this especially in the day before all these cheaper China-made condensors we now have the choice of -- pelusos, studio projects, avantones, ADKs, etc.).
From the few tapes I've heard, the 4051s have a similar sound to the 4041s, but nicer and a bit more refined.
fwiw...
Peluso's are not made in china.
just the metal housing.
I primarily run 4051a. Paired with SD-MP2 or MiniMP. Love 'em. 4053a in the holster too.

Gotcha. Somehow I thought they were designed in the US, capsule made in the US, and assembled in China.
I ran a set of the AT4051as for a few years and sold them to a friend for $700 then bought a pair of gefell m300s.They are ATs top of the line SDC.The bodies are actually AT4900a and the caps are AT4051(card) AT4053(hyper) and AT4049(omnis).You should be able to find some 95>98 Panic done with these mics with various caps/pres.Very musical sounding mics IMO I enjoyed them.
regards,
Jim
I am a sucker for AT mics and I like the few tapes I've heard with these a lot. Helluva snag Nick!
Shameless pitch: Keep me in mind if the marginal utility on these runs out for you in the near future. ;D
$250 for a pair of At4051's is a bleepin' steal, IMO. Possibly of this decade. Audio Technica, for some stupid reason, .......and I mean that, ......gets absolutely no LOVE on this website. They make great mics. Lurve my AT3031's. Very Schoepshish-sounding. For a 1/10th of the price. :P ;)

I love the sound of spyders 3031's. If you haven't heard them do your self a favor and tryem. They are only 180 a peice...
My old buddy Chris Clark ran the 4051/4053's side by side to my 480's on Phish tour EVERYNIGHT, and his tapes were always consistently good :) Theyre no 480's IMO, but you def got an AMAZING deal Nick! Great mics and def overlooked in our circles....

plenty of love from me for my "swiss army knife of mics" at4050's. i enjoy them thoroughly ;D
Pretty good deal compared to this:

Deal of the century is still Eric's virtually free mega-gefell/mod-R4/V2/etc yardsale complete bail out :)

agreed!
that gefell deal was CRAZY GOOD! its the only thing thats sold in the YS all summer/fall/winter too......
Have I mentioned that I like Audio Technica?
have I mentioned i passed on these because of the potential shaddy dealings?
and the realization that I still need to pay Peluso for the P stereo...as there is no way in hell i'm letting that go ?
:+)
if you do score them for that price, that is a GREAT deal.
I ran 4051a's -> V3 -> P1 for a while (then moved for akg 460's). I dug the at's, had got some decent tapes (1 totally smokin' tape!) but I dig the akg sound more, which is why I ultimatly switched.
januszak & i have been rockin' the 4041's since '01,
very under rated mics around here

Gentleman... mark your calendars... ;D
250 usd for a pair is an excellent deal. I bought mine new from ebay in July for 410 usd. I love the sound of these mics...
Here's a show I taped over the weekend:
AT4051s > Aerco > R09

T+ sounds good....
so i take it you went through w/the auction and got those mics Dan ?
good one.
