Title: Probably dumbest question ever, but I'm stuck
Post by: tms on November 26, 2007, 11:14:32 AM
I just switched to Vista and now my old reliable Nero 5 or 6 CD burning software won't work.

I can burn audio files using Media Player and Windows Explorer but they both leave in 2 second blanks between tracks:  really annoying in a live recording!!

What are people using now in Vista?  Anything free?

You haven't seen the new Mac commercials?  People are switching back to XP if they want stuff that actually works... :P

agree.  I had vista, dumped it and back to xp.  vista sucks because none of the old shit works with it.  And yes, I know all about compatibility mode and all that other jazz, still doesn't work correctly.

If you are going to stay with vista, you need all new software.  Yes, it sucks.  Bad.

I'm using Nero 8 on vista with no problems.  I DL'd the program off of a torrent site and it works fine.

Vista for the most part sucks...but I've adapted to other programs and it works fine for me now.

But the shitter is I could never get vista and wavelab to play nice.  But....I've decided soundforge and vegas are just as nice.

That's so pathetic that they expect everyone to just buy new everything.  But I guess that's how microsoft and their partners make money.

It is also funny that after spending so much on the OS it can't even burn a DAO audio CD.

And it seems like nero changes the interface in every version... maybe to make it seem 'new' and worth the money. I guess it would be too much to ask for the DAO burn process to be the same in nero 5, 6, 7, 8, etc.

EAC has a setting to burn DAO
and yes, vista sucks

On the CD layout editor, click layout on top and uncheck add 2 second gap

FYI, you won't be able to buy XP with a new computer after Jan 2008.  What this means is computers bought after that date will only have Vista and may have driver issues with XP since its not required to be qualified by OEMs.  Honestly I would get a Mac at this point and put XP in a Virtual Machine.  I was just playing with VMware fusion on this Mac Mini I have here and it's the best of both worlds.

I don't have a problem with Vista, overall it's pretty cool.  Is it so much better than XP to justify a whole new OS?  Probably not.  It's just this one thing is pi$$ing me off!

I can't switch back to XP b/c the reason we have a new pc is I f'd up the old one.  SWMBO has forbidden me to touch the new one!!  ;D

I may have found some freeware that will do it, haven't had a chance to try it out though.

You mean the new machines wouldn't be backwards compatible and support XP? I think that's a damn conspiracy against Microsoft users.

Yes, there are already issues finding XP drivers for some of the newer machines on the market.  I can only imagine it will get worse as time goes on.

I read somewhere (don't recall at the moment, damn this oldtimers disease) this morning that that date had been pushed back another 5 or 6 months - June comes to mind but it may have been July that was mentioned.

What's DAO?
Disc At Once (no gaps between songs)

not true!
you can burn a DAO cd and the tracks still have gaps... DAO means burn the whole cd and close the session in one instance.

in nero thats called multisessions
dao typically is referring top the gaps between tracks, although you are correct that some programs call it dao vs multisession

That is a funny read, XP is almost 3 times as fast as Vista doing the same thing.  Wow what a turd they have on their hands

Well my bit of freeware works great but still puts a 2 second gap in between tracks.  Very annoying on a live recording.

I guess I'll have to start clipping off the cheering and non-music parts of the recordings, add fading in and out, and burn my audio cd's with the 2 second gaps.  I've done this on one cd and I kind of like it but it's more work.  You lose the in between song chatter by the artists but sometimes that's not a bad thing.  I've got a recording of Ricky Scaggs and Kentucky Thunder that's like 1/3 just him talking and tuning.

you should only edit recordings made by you (maybe it is)
personally i think the tuning and talking is all part of the show and like to have it in there, a show tracked correctly you can jump ahead to the next song and you don't need to go thru all the work of adding fades and whatnot

Oh, your earlier post said iTunes would do DAO on a PC, but that wasn't the issue so I didn't look into it.

They're all my own recordings.

I'll give iTunes a try, thanks!

Thanks willndmb and +T !

iTunes worked perfectly, it's little awkward getting the tracks into a playlist one by one, but once there it'll burn an audio disk with 0 second gaps no problem.  And I think it'll save the playlist for future burns
