Title: Best all-in-one for Peluso CEMC-6 mics?
Post by: aberg on December 02, 2007, 10:12:39 PM
Hey, deciding to grab a set of pelusos since I like their sound and with active cables appearing to be a reality soon, seems like a good decision, and the price is right!

Been thinking of finding a good 24bit all in one box to pair with. Obviously, I would have liked to keep my 702 for this purpose but reality is, money's tight, so I'm hoping to find something that comes in at a low price point but really suits these mics.

I've heard that the pelusos work nice with both transparent and warm pres, so I guess I'm looking for people's opinion/experiences who've run these mics.

I'm leaning towards a busman transparent mod FR2LE at this moment, but swing any which way depending on recording samples and advice....

Here's to hoping this great community can help me out as they have in the past countless times...

cheers,

Andrew

I ran them with an ACM HD-P2, PSP2, M148, M248, BM2p+ UA5, SD702. Hypers needed the warmth of the HDP2, PSP2, M148 and all other caps matched well with the other pres/decks. All and all, I was happy with subcards only > the 702.

Thanks for the input. I plan on picking up a set of subcards if I can to run almost exclusively... I'm thinking I can't really go wrong with either warm or transparent.. just would be whichever flavour I'd prefer. I tend not to like overpowering low-end, partly because I don't have the best playback equipment... might opt for a more transparent option and just see how it sounds...

I too like various flavors, I would have also liked to run them them with a V2 and a Portico (with and without silk) but what the hell. As for warmth the PSP-2 was  a rockin' match and everyday regret selling it, but looking at your original post I bet the Busman transparent FR2LE would be great ala the mod UA5 which had great speed o' detail...it caught everything in the air.

I'm really happy with the cemc6 through the V3.

My PMD670 is at busman's getting an upgrade.
I'll report back after I get my hands on it.

edit: I got my subcards from AtlasProAudio who just ordered them drop shipped directly from Peluso Labs.
Had I known that I would have just called him or ordered direct from his site. He seemed like a nice guy when I talked to him on the phone.

I've run the Pelusos through a bm2p+ UA-5, stock R-4, and now the AERCO MP-2. I liked these through the transparent busman mod, but feel that they really shine through the AERCO. I think a pre with some warmth helps the midrange on these mics.

Do you have any really nice recordings you could post done with Peluso CK21 > Aerco > R09... that's a rig I could potentially see myself running... nice and small for when the actives become a reality too. How long does it take for those aerco boxes to be built? Is the warmth sometimes too much for the low-end of the mics which is already pretty prominent? Especially for poorer quality playback gear?

Thanks for the comments guys...

Here's a recent one that I like:
Tim O'Brien:

Mountain Heart:

Also, there are a couple in my archive.org signiture link (Black Angels, Eddie From Ohio). But, I really like the way the subcards > AERCO works for the Tim/MH show. It's a venue that I know well, so it's easy for me to compare. I've only had the AERCO for a little bit, so am still learning the sound, but I like it a lot.

My AERCO took about 2 months to build. I would assume that long, so don't be in too big of a rush. I only had one customization - a locking phantom switch. I think it's a very detailed, yet warm pre. The Black Angels show had a fair amount of low end, so you can try that one to compare. I think the low end is actually more controlled with the AERCO than the other pres I've run, which I attribute to the more robust midrange. I generally see/tape more folk artists than any other type of music, and I really like this pre for that music type.

I was not a fan of how my Peluso's sounded with my Oade Song Catcher PMD660.   I would bet a P-mod UA5 would sound sick!

What exactly is the P-mod.... warmth? transparency?

Presence mod (by the Oades). Not sure if they make that mod with any box besides the UA-5.

It would be really nice to try the Aerco, but I don't really want to wait 2 months and this actually comes in cheaper and is an all-in-one box... so theoretically I could sell the r09 too if necessary...

Yeah, I'm hoping this thing will be similar in size in my bag as the 702 was... looking at the dimensions I think it's close, which is nice an compact.... maybe even stealthable... hmm.
