Title: identify this mic?
Post by: Tim on December 05, 2007, 03:11:12 PM
Anyone know what this is? I see them a lot in footage of old folk fests - Newport and the like. I've noticed them in shots of Bill Monroe as well. You'll occasionaly see a stereo pair too in front of Dylan when he's solo acoustic.

Anyway I've always wondered what they were

At first glance it looked like a Beyer m500, with a slightly bigger grill screen.  But it's mounted vertically, so it could be a fig8 or just a LD of some sort.  More than likely it is some sort of ribbon.

That is a Schoeps with a W 20 windscreen.

Brent, at best we would only be able to identify the windscreen, not the microphone that's in it. You're right, the windscreen is of a type that Schoeps has manufactured for decades. digifish_music's photo is also of a Schoeps, or an exceedingly good imitation.

However, in the 1950s and early 60s Schoeps manufactured accessories (including windscreens and table stands, etc.) for Telefunken, Philips, Siemens, and even (I kid you not) Neumann--all of whom sold them under their own brand names. Or in one case, the "M 280 N" (variant of the KM 84), Telefunken was selling Neumann microphones with Schoeps windscreens and other accessories under Telefunken's brand name.

So it's entirely possible that the microphones are Schoeps M 221 Bs--but it is also entirely possible that they are AKGs, Neumanns or even (gasp) something else that just happened to be the right shape and size.

Yes, sadly, it's true--no one in this forum could possibly know this from their own experience, but--recording engineers sometimes ... improvise a little. It's a huge scandal, of course, so please don't tell anyone that you heard this from me.

--best regards

Very true, admitted Brent somewhat schoepishly. The microphone beneath the windscreen could indeed be Neumann, AKG, or some ersatz microphone of the day with similar proportions.

It's always interesting to 'hear' fine-grained explanations of the various microphone products distributed as-by Telefunken.
