I taped dinosaur JR on the 12th with hypers, DINa from the balcony rail in a smallish club. I was not thrilled with the results. Too bright/washy and accentuating the already outrageous upper midrange in the guitar. Balancing these freq with eq made the vocals suffer.
dinojr are not really a metal band but fairly close loudness wise. J Mascis had 3 full Marshall stacks (ok one was a hiwatt) and another Marshall combo pointed at his head.
If I had to do it over I would go with cards narrow X/Y or DINa.

good point. hypers do tend to lessen the low end, so maybe the cards are the way to go. although ive found that i like in general a wider spread when not coincident, like ortf or nos opposed to din or dinA. but here again thats always been a completely different type of music so.... ::)
+t for the input.

Metal bands are harsh and peircing. I would warm it up with some card action. Maybe skip the V3 and run into the warm channels of the R4....
good luck!
