Title: Quick 16:9 question
Post by: Jimna on December 27, 2007, 10:19:32 AM
im rendering my first 16:9 dvd with vegas.  my question is this; when i render it, to render it properly, is all i need to do is change the aspect ratio or do i need to change its size as well?

thanks in advance.

Depends if your footage is native 16:9 or not.  If it's native 16:9, set to 1.2 pixel aspect ratio, 720x480 for SD.  If you shot it full-frame at 0.9 pixel aspect ratio, I'm not exactly sure how you would turn it into true 16:9, since it would then appear stretched.

Set your rendering template as NTSC DV Widescreen.

and that will render a normal looking video, not all stretched looking?

If the footage was shot in widescreen then you need to render it in widescreen.  Try a 1 minute sample and see how it works.

Dont' forget to tell your authoring software that you're using 16:9 footage as well.

If it is full screen (4:3) you don't want to make it widescreen (16:9) because you shot it in full screen so it wouldn't look as good. If your camera is capable of actually filming true 16:9 then it is a good idea to render that video like that because true 16:9 is actually wider and if you rendered it 4:3 you would be cutting off the sides. If it was 4:3 and you made it 16:9 you would just be cutting of the top and bottom of your shot to make it look like it is widescreen but it is not really widescreen because the camera didn't film it that way.
