i'm dealing with some 24 bit files i recorded. i've tracked them out with CD Wave and checked the "use alt 24 bit" box in cd wave when i saved them. (i've found that if i don't check that box i can't get the wave files to play in foobar) now i've encoded them with flac front end, and i get this message in foobar when i try to play the 24 bit flac files: "Decoding failure at 0:00.000 (Unsupported format or corrupted file)"
i've upgraded all software, flac, flac frontend, and foobar. i can still play 24 bit flac files in foobar that i made before i upgraded the flac.
any ideas?

this has been covered in a few other threads already.
to sum up.
with the latest version of FLAC (v1.2.1), the way 24 bit files are encoded has changed. This results in much better compression ratios for 24 bit files, however, on the software side of things, many applications still need to be updated.
The two issues that most people post about are (1) issues with foobar playback, and (2) false error messages from archive.org after uploading 24 bit FLACs (encoded with v1.2.1), because the older version of FLAC that the archive uses cannot decode the files, so it automatically assumes an error with the files.
For foobar, the answer is easy. support for the latest version of FLAC is included in all versions 0.9.5.x and higher. For the time being however, this version of foobar is still in beta. That said, I've been using a beta version of foobar for a couple of months now with no issues. So go over and download the most recent beta version, and your foobar/FLAC issues will be over with.
As for the archive (which you didn't ask about), who knows when they'll get around to updating their FLAC support. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

no worries, it's easy to miss the beta versions.
there's also some more detailed discussion in this thread:

I'm getting this message (unsupported or corrupt file) even though I have downloaded the latest version of Foobar, and this thread is 4 years old. I can't even get Foobar to run at all without the message popping up. Do I need to do a full registry clean, purge of Foobar related files etc before I install? It took me quite a while to clean out all traces of Samplitude so that I could re-install that. I am running XP still.

Funny you mention Samplitude. I get errors like that from Foobar when Samplitude is open.
If I close Samplitude and Foobar, then relaunch Foobar, all works fine
It's odd. I'm using Vista 64 Business.
