Title: AT943(SP-CMC8) > CA-ST9100 > MT24/96; BBox needed??
Post by: Hman on January 02, 2008, 07:53:24 AM
I'm planning on buying some AT943Hypers as I'm having several upcoming shows in venues with bad acoustics, where my Omni's don't seem to be best option.
I already have some MM-MCSM4 card. with a BBox w/ bass roll-off. Since last November I got my hands on a Church Audio ST-9100 pre, which I want to use in combination with the new Hypers.

I was wondering if I also need a BBox w/ bass roll-off in this (new) rig??
(I'm taping with a MT24/96)

The CA9100 is a preamp, which is better then a battery box. A battery box is not needed

Mics>CA9100>Recorder

The 9100 acts as a BB and can do attenuation or gain if needed.

Interesting replies - So the 9100 not only works as a great mic-pre, but gives as much power to the mics as a standard BBox?  I wasn't aware of that!
So does the BBox become just another variable that isn't needed in the chain?  Just another thing to screw up if a connection pulls out?

You are probably going to be fine if your position is good, your audience to PA noise ration is low and you use the the mic-preamp.

I can tell you that you will be very happy with your AT's.  I moved to that same model a couple of years ago and have noticed a huge difference in my recordings.  AT might as well stand for Audience Tamers!  My core sound cards were very good, but the AT 943's were well worth the money.

All the best!

When the ST-9100 gain is set to 11:00 it is acting the same as a battery box (neither attenuating or boosting) so owning a battery box would be superfluous. The ST-9100 has a switchable bass roll-off, so you don't need a battery box for that either.

Having the ST-9100 instead of a battery box may come in handy with the MicroTrack even for loud show becasue you can attenuate the signal being fed to the MicroTrack and apparently the MIcroTrack will sometimes distort at very loud shows even if you have the Microtrack gain set as low as it will possibly go.
