Title: Edirol R09 + AT853 with 3Wire Battery box
Post by: MLKLuke on January 06, 2008, 11:48:34 AM
hi guys,
I'm going to replace my JB3 with an Edirol R09 (basically because JB3 is getting old and R09 is much smaller and easier to manage/check levels and would allow me to cut off AD-20 from my rig).I would like to know if R09 will form a good rig with my AT853 / 3 Wire Battery box. I mean...I would need something else or I can have good results with this new setup?

thanks in advance  ;)

You would be better off converting the mics to two wire and doing my 4.7k mod then using them direct with your edirol and see if you have enough gain if not you might need a preamp.

I have used a 3 wire batt box and 853's for years with excellent results, although I wasn't using an R9 the recorder part is interchangable.

so you think that using with 3 wire setup + battery box direct into R09 would not give me enough gain?

this would be a big problem cause I would have to buy another preamp (AD20 only has digital output) so it's not the best choice for me. anyone ever experienced this kind of setup (AT853 > 3Wire > R09)?

You can use your set up just like it is... Or you can simplify it by doing my mod and losing the battery box altogether. You will actually gain about 1.5 db in level over your 3 wire battery box and you can now use it with your lower voltage supply from the edirol with out fear of distortion. The only thing is like in both cases you still might find you need a preamp for some shows in that case you can simply use the preamp when you need it and leave it at home when you dont. The best of both worlds.

I guess I should have clarified a little more.  my 3 wire bbox is also a preamp....

each mic has its own 3 wire input....  With this option if I wanted to buy phantom poer adapters I could.  Then I could use the mics with any pre just not this little stealthy pre for those less then open situations... >:D

I ran AT 853>3 wire BB>R09 once, and even with the gain MAXED on the R09 I couldn't get levels up to my liking. Granted it depends on how loud what you're recording is, but IME you need either a 2 wire battery box or some type of pre.

Well it sounds like you have already answered your own question... Use your preamp with the edirol :)

Chris knows more about his mod than me but I used to run my AT853s off a 3 wire battery box made by Fozzy, and then I did the 4.7k mod myself and I swear I *lost* a couple dB sensitivity.  Maybe I screwed up the mod (sounds fine to me and has handled some loud shows though) or maybe Fozzy's box is different from other 3 wire boxes (it's the Crown Royal version with a single miniXLR connector but it uses the outside of the connector for a 4th "wire", still maybe this becomes more like 2 wire), but there you have it.

FWIW, I think 4.7K or 3 wire AT853s > R09 should be fine for rock shows, but you will have to use the high sensitivity mic input for acoustic shows, even "amplified acoustic".  Using the low sensitivity input, a record level of 30 gets me peaks of about -6 with moderately loud PA shows (see the archive link in my signature for the type of music I mostly record).

Edit:  Fozzy's box definitely did reduce the senstivity compared to the original 2 wire battery box from SP I was using.  I think by about 9 dB.

My 3wire battery box has 2 miniXLR inputs (1 for each mic). basically I tape rock shows (radiohead-cure-smashing pumpkins-depeche mode-muse-kaiser chiefs...) so I think I will try with 853 > 3Wire > R09 and see what happens and if I will feel the need of a preamp. do you think I will miss some gain with such type of shows?

I think you'll be fine recording that type of show without a preamp.
