Title: High End / Consumer Mic Comparison
Post by: SAnthony on January 09, 2008, 03:47:04 PM
Ello ello,

I was reading a thread (on these forums i believe) where comparisons were being made soundwise between the SD 7xx & the Tascam HD-P2, i think it was pointed out that SD 7xx recorders had slightly better detail & the bass sounded better whereas the HD-P2 sounded slightly warmer & more musical, but overall not a massive difference, it was also pointed out that the choice of microphone was actually going to have more of an overall effect on the quality / character of the recordings, i've been saving to buy a Pearl MS 2, i'm half way there but it looks like i'm going to be made redundant & so i can't really justify spending £1100 GBP on a mic, my cheaper option was the Rode NT4; Basically what i want to know is how much difference is it really going to make sound wise? Sorry if this might be a slightly ridiculous question but i've never had the opportunity to test a top spec mic.

Cheers.

Consider the Studio Projects LSD2 instead of the Rode.

SAnthony, the microphones (and where you put them) make much more difference to the sound quality than the recorder, provided that everything is functioning as it should.

With modern technology there is no excuse for a recorder to have any discernable sound quality whatsoever. It ought to give back what you put into it, neither more nor less. That isn't asking too much these days.

I've made many recordings with a cassette recorder and very good microphones in a good place; those all sound worlds better than what I could have gotten with the world's greatest recorder and a pair of inferior microphones, or with microphones of any quality that were not well placed.

Let's hope above all that you can keep your job, though.

Thanks for your feedback, i definitely want to get the Pearl mic over anything cheaper but I'm definitely losing my job as well  :'( although if i can get another job as soon as possible i'll have a little bit of redundancy money to play with, wahay!! Thanks for your concern.
