Title: DIY mics
Post by: Nick's Picks on January 12, 2008, 10:14:20 AM
I'd like to build myself a pair of little cheap stealth mics.

looking for capsule suggestions / sources.
I know the pani's are the "go to" cap (core sound, SP..etc etc).

wondering if there is something better out there ?

Any tips in the same DIY direction for capsules that can be powered from a 9V battery and are cardioid? FET required and present so no preamp is necessary?
I understand that I can't buy DIY Sennheiser MKH80x0 performance but what would be nice to try?

Or these Primo's on Ebay? Wonder if they're any good for DIY mics. They do come prewired, which is less of a hassle..

The capsules on ebay are cardioid. So you must find a way to house them... Not an easy task but it can be done.

Thanks, the S/N seems down on the Panasonic caps...but the sensitivity is down on the panasonic too.

The panasonic capsule is a great capsule but if your planning on doing anything but recording birds it must be modified. The primo capsule for "most" recording does not require any modifications what so ever.. But you can do my 4.7k mod to this capsule and then it will handle anything. They are both good capsules I notice the primo has less bottom end but in an omni that's not such a bad thing. The top end is very much the same on both capsules except the primo is flatter past 20k.
