Would using a preamp and external mike, such as the Church STC-9000, clean up and strengthen the signal of my Edirol R-09? Using the built-in microphones, there is a clearly audible hiss, even at the highest quality recording settings.

Yes.

Hey, thanks. Obviously, I'm new to this.
How exactly does the R-09 hook up to the preamp?
-
External mic attaches to preamp which attaches to R-09 via 1/8" miniplug into line-in jack. I have a Church 9100 pre and it works great with the R09 -- highly recommended.

Thank you very much.

Thank you very much.
Here is Mics( the end of the mics are the big XLR inputs going into the pre amp) plugged in to the Sonosax pre amp ( the big black thing) then a 3.5mm right angle plug from the pre amp to the edirol r-09 line input.

Seconded. Nothing but great results with the 9100 and R-09.

Good stuff. I plan on getting the Church 9100 and the Edirol this Christmas. Sounds like a winner. Thanks for the advise.

...and here is an R09 with a Sound Devices MixPre (and a possum)... :)

MixPres are particularly good when you need to use high preamp-gain levels without hiss (field recording for example).

Go for it. It's a killer combination.
You mean the new R09HR, right? It's a tremendous machine. ;)
