Some fellow on the rockbox developers mailinglist got hold of a company that is going to sell IDE to ZIF adapters.
As you maybe know, drives with normal IDE connectors are rare, all new drives use ZIF connectors. So If you want to upgrade that 20GB drive to 80GB or your 40GB to 80/120/160 this adapter should help.
It hasn't been tested yet but seeing the number of interested parties, it should get through ;)
the mailinglist post is located here: http://www.rockbox.org/mail/archive/rockbox-dev-archive-2008-01/0004.shtml (http://www.rockbox.org/mail/archive/rockbox-dev-archive-2008-01/0004.shtml)

I think many of us here would be happy to receive one of these adapters for hope that they would make modern drive interfaces work soon.
This is great.

Petur, I am interested but do not want to post on the developers mailing list and make an ass out of myself. I am interested in obtaining a IDE-ZIF adapter as I accidentally purchased a MK4009GAL for my H120 (ZIF). Anyway to get on the mailing list without the fuss of posting on the thread?
I am just curious though, why does the firmware need to be rewritten? Have they seen this guy's handmade solution to the problem?

It works in a H340 without any mods to RB if the drive is of the same size.

I agree that the dev list is the wrong place for that, I'll convince them to move the order list to some other place (forum/wiki)

They are probably thinking of using one of those 80GB drives that are in an ipod. They somehow started using different sectorsizes. Code has been written for that and is used for those ipods, and that probably needs to be made more general.

Don't panic, just reset if you really need to!
Seriously, this could be a GREAT thing.

No, I mailed the person who will get the adapters, and asked him to create a wiki page or something similar so people can get in touch.

Thanks, Petur!

update:
a sample adapter is on its way to one of the main devs to see if it will work with an iriver...
-
bump.
Keep us posted when yolu get any news, please!

the sample adapter hasn't arrived at the dev's place yet....
-
update:
the dev involved (LinusN - no not that Linus!) got the adapter and placed an MK1011GAH (100GB, ZIF) drive in his h140 with success - no modifications needed (except the adapter of course)

Could you point us to a link? Again, the list on the RB thread is loose and as a result I am not sure who to contact about getting one!
-
there's no link yet I think, and the update I just posted was just reported as the dev was trying it and telling about it on IRC. More info will come as news spreads ;)

Petur, dumb question: the instructions are for the H140. Has anyone done a H120 with a MK4009GAL? I know it will be a tight fit in the H140, but will it be even a tighter fit in the H120?
Thanks and +T

no idea, the first test was done just now....
