I have soundman Rock-studio mics with A3 Adapter going into a microtrack. I recently have obtained a deneke ad20 and im wondering if id still need the A3 in the linage of my rig.
for example:
Soundman RS > A3 Adapter > DenekeAD20 > Microtrack or
minus the A3 Adapter.
here is the a3 adapter, its a powersource for the mics and has attenuation/rolloff. im mainly concerned about the powersource as the deneke would supply the sufficient power needed? i dont need atten or rolloff.

the AD-20 does not provide any power of any kind to the mics. so you'll need something to power the mics.

Not only does the AD-20 not supply power to microphones, but its input circuit can't tolerate microphone powering. If you use any kind of microphone power supply with it, that power supply must prevent any DC from reaching the AD-20's inputs. Not all power supplies do so.
I once made the mistake of taking the AD-20 out for a recording along with a type of 48-Volt phantom power supply that doesn't block DC at its outputs. The AD-20 simply would not put out a signal, and the recording was a total failure. The singer whom I was asked to record has since become quite successful, and she thinks that I'm a complete idiot. And she may well be right--but my point is: Be sure to test the setup at home before taking it to the recording.

If the A3 powers the mics, then as the others said, you need to keep it in the lineage. I have a Denecke PS-2 in front of the AD-20.

ive tried going nak 300 > ad20 > archos jb20 (it has s/pdif in), as well as the strasser dat deck.
it wont pass a signal for some reason. is there a certain way that everything has to be done?
i.e. something like plug everything in, then turn it on, or turn everything on, then plug it in, etc etc.

Standard procedure is turn everything off, plug everything in, turn on AD-20 BEFORE recorder, so AD-20 is putting out a signal when the recorder looks for it.

So from the beginning... Are you using optical or coax? Do you see the red light at the end of the optical cable you are using? The AD-20 sends out 0.5V over coax and some recorders (the D8 for example) expects a higher voltage so you have to stick a midiman C02 or similar in between. But I guess the Archos does optical? There is probably some settings needed to enable optical input.

Well, there is the manufacturer, of course ... www.denecke.com ... with excellent service and the best possible knowledge of the equipment.
Incidentally I don't agree that it shouldn't work with a D8; I've used that combination myself dozens of times with no problem.

I've also used the denecke without issues with d8/d7.
