Title: Handheld recorder comparisons - 2008
Post by: spyder9 on January 23, 2008, 06:32:35 PM
Below are comps Wingfield Audio did on all the various handheld recorders we currently use:  Korg MR-1, Marantz 620, Edirol R09, Sony D1, Sony D50, Zoom H2, Zoom H4, and the Microtrack II .  Comps professional done IMO.  Cool stuff.

Hi, I guess the comp is comparing the actual recorder inself with their mics. A more detail comp will be using external mics and comparing the AD and/or internal preamp. So it's a good comp if you aim to use the recorder as an all in one (including the supplied mics).

Some oddities in the chart -

"Zoom H2 - simultaneous record tracks = 2".  Well, that's 2 stereo tracks, so the figure for the rest of the recorders should, on that basis, be 1 (I'm not sure about the H4).  The fact that it has a 4 channel mode is noted at the bottom of the chart.

"Zoom H2 - Analog outputs = 1/8" line, 1/8" phones" - should be "1/8" phones/line"

The "Computer Connection" row could more usefully be labelled "USB2.0 speed" and distinguish those which are "high speed" (fast) and those that are "full speed" (slow, like the H2).

Good stuff, +T for posting!

Not that it matters to us, but the MP3 capability for the MR-1 is omitted in the table. It is available after a firmware update, according to korg.com:
"MP3 format - 44.1kHz/192kbps - playback 44.1kHz/32kbps-320kbps (MP3 format support will be added in an upcoming free update. This system updater is expected be available in the middle of 2007 via KORG distributor’s websites)"

I'd like to see the new Olympus LS-10 side by side, to get a grasp of how it compares featurewise. I hope Wingfield will keep it updated!
