When taping in small crowded bars, I have had success using my smaller bogen stand. It has a small footprint, so you can get pretty close with it. Just have to block. My favorite is when I setup right next to the bar, that way I don't have to leave my rig to get a drink and you have a barrier.  8)

I'm using a 10 foot stand I bought on the cheap off of ebay.  Search here and there are plenty of threads about it.  I'm thinking about getting a 15 footer.  I made the mic mounts and t-bar myself.

Nice clamp to glom off another's stand:

Great attachment for clamp for over 1st row balcony: 9" extention arm Going to buy this today! for NMA in NYC for tuesday

Adapter for the end or clamp for vertical use: Can't find picks or link but they have one and it has 3/8: threaded stud out top this adapter  slips over the stud on the clamp or extension which is horizontal when clamped to a vertical pole. When on a horizontal pole it is not needed.

People might say that this clap is over kill but I find it holds better to most things than any other I have seen. It enables you to go out far of a pole and have multiple rigs on it with no fear of weight. I use it with an akg stero bar with 1 vark bar off the middle of the akg, and 2 quick release extensions on the stereo arms of the akg bar with a pair of mics each into shure donuts... Thats 6 mics =3rigs with cables and shock mounts for everything...

No that is my stealth rig ROFL JK!

A :-)

Do you need a wide stance?

At most open shows, I use a 8footer.  I've always wanted to replace this with a taller stand (up to 12') with a smaller footprint, but smaller footprint might not be a good idea since I run TLs (very top heavy when flying).  But hey, for $35 from Ebay, I shouldn't complain about the one I got now...

I also have a short stand for on-stage, it ranged from 2' to 4'.  I've used it a couple of times...  In the photo, you can see my ADK LEs about 2'AGL on-stage.

At the Pour House in Raleigh, they set up a pole for us, I usually clamp and get up to about 10'.

I also have a multitude.
an "on stage" stand.  18" min, 4' max.
FOB stand 7'
"section" stand (carls) 9', and my ol' Raven at 10', may she RIP.
my outdoor stand, a massive 17' monster.  collapsed, its still 4+ long.

then there's the clamps.
manfroto "superclamp" with the long extension arm.  its not the smallest or lightest,  but its the best.
this: http://tinyurl.com/2bpf3j, which I have really enjoyed as of late, but was frustrated w/it for the first year.  kept sagging on me.  I've got it all figured out now though.
its quite nice.  you can take off the whole arm part and just have a sweet tiny clamp w/a stud sticking out.  perfect for the schoeps/neumann/dpa actives (or any active setup).
I am running it now w/the full bodies beyers and having excellent results w/a VARK bar.  sweet versitility.
any way, great clamp and dirt ass cheap.

i did a little research on this stand and found out that the treaded tip at the top is 1/4 in.  i was wondering what modification you make at the top to fit a 5/8 in stereo bar?  is there a stereo bar made to fit the 1/4 in tip or do you use some sort of adapter?

If your stand has a 5/8" stud (no threads) tip (some of which also include a 1/4"-20 thread on the end), consider a Bogen 5/8" stud | 3/8" male thread Rapidapter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5357&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) and a 3/8" > 5/8" thread adapter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=400109&is=REG&addedTroughType=search).  The Rapidapter makes for easy/swift on/off.

If you don't have a 5/8" stud with the 1/4" thread on top, and have only the 1/4" thread, you'll need a 1/4" > 3/8" thread adapter (also available on B&H and elsewhere) + the 3/8" > 5/8" adapter noted above.

Not sure which stand you are refering to because several have been mentioned in this thread.  But if you were talking about the stand I mentioned, it has a reversible head; one end has a 1/4"-20 male thread and the other has 3/8" male thread.

Got one left but several people have asked about it.  I'm placing that one on hold through the weekend to hear back from them.  If I don't then its back on the floor for sale.

FWIW, everyone has their own things that they look for in a stand.  Yeah, height is the main consideration people seem to focus on.  I'd say get a tall one...you can always go lower.

But, I also consider a small footprint to be really important.  Some stands set up really solid by locking the legs without extending them all the way out fully.  That's a nice feature.

What you DEF don't want is a stand with a 4 foot or even a 40 inch footprint that people are gonna be tripping over all night long.  You end up spending more time watching the legs of your stand than the show (to protect others safety and your gears' safety).

This is what I use. It is the stand adapter that fits right over the top.
It has a 3/8" stud coming from it and you use a 3/8"~>5/8" adapter.

It's available here for cheap $$$

And of course you'll need a 3/8"~>5/8" thread adapter, which you should always have a few of anyway IMO

7', 13' and a super clamp.

For a stand, I prefer a lighter weight clamp than the superclamp.  Don't get me wrong, the super clamp is...well super.  It's a great clamp to have in your gear bag, but I find that it's a bit bulky and kinda overkill for most stand clamping needs.  Also, with the superclamp, you usually need additional superclamp accessories; the stud, extension bars, 1/4 to 5/8 adapters, etc.

For lighter duty needs, I set out on a search for a great ROWI clamp and although I found a nice ROWI, I also bought the following Ultra Clamp.

Honestly, I've used the Ultra Clamp more than any of the others and find that I like it more than any other clamp that I own.

True.

I have the 17' manfroto stand, 3076, I think. It is a tank and Id feel confident going pretty much max height with a lot of mics on there, but the footprint and the fact that it is silver make it completely unwelcome in FOB land. It is perfect for section taping most of the time, but now I need to get a travef/FOB black stand with a small footprint.

if you have the 806a you don't even need the bottom adapter, the stand has a top bolt that flips with a 3/8 on it
so you can just use the 3/8 > 5/8 with the tbar
