Title: Getting popping/digi noise in my playback
Post by: NOLAfishwater on January 28, 2008, 10:29:27 PM
Been getting this weird popping/digi noise in my playback. I just installed an MAudio AP24/96 and have been running SPDIF out into my stereo receiver. Are there any settings that I need to use to get a clean signal from my computer to my receiver? When I rewind and listen to the same part over, the popping sound is gone. I wonder if it is the sound card I am using? WTF I can't figure it out.

you may need to bump the buffer up a bit in the settings.  click on the icon then hardware > buffer

that should fix it.  I've never experienced this but others have and that did the trick.

Are you supposed to set the buffer at the same setting as your processor. Mine runs at 1GB or ram. Don't know anything about buffer but it looks like it has the following options:

64
128
256
384
512
768
896
1024   < was going to use this buffer selection
1280
1536
1792
2048

Keep setting it higher until the popping goes away.  Or, set it as high as it will go, then lower it in steps until the popping returns, and bump it up one step.  FWIW, my control panel goes up to 4096.  If yours doesn't, might be worth upgrading your drivers.  And if that doesn't fix the problem, then...  ???

Just downloaded the new drivers for it and it now goes up to 4096 buffer size. I think it has remedied the problem. Thank you Brian & Gordon. +Ts to both of you.

Will report back tomorrow to see if was a permanent fix.

what software are you using to playback? what  bit depth/sample rate?

The popping/cracking occurs when using all sound editing programs, WinAmp, and even when I stream on the LMA. Basically it has this problem all the time. WTF. I can't figure it out. Tempted to ditch this one and buy a new sound card.

it may be a bad card.  it's not the brand card ;)  they are great.  it's a either a bad card or something else.  I know that's not much help ;)

what are all your settings in the maudio control panel??

If you have an open slot on your motherboard, try moving the card to it. May not make any difference but way back when (W95 and ISA cards) I added a card that didn't like the first slot it was in, had all sorts of miscellaneous problems, call the manufacturer's tech line, after adjusting all kinds of settings to no avail, one tech suggested trying a different slot. Cured the problems I had been having. Made no sense to me but it worked. Might be worth a try.

I think I'd try shutting down all other programmes running in the background.  Run > "msconfig" > Startup > untick almost everything except Anti-Virus (I only have AV and keyboard software running, but this may vary with you) > restart.  I have a Dio 2496 and have transferred it from PC to PC through numerous upgrades with no problems.

Best of luck.

O.K. here is a list of everything starting up:
Nero Check
KHALMNPR
jusched
(blank) - I have no idea what this is
NeroChek
WinAmpa
qttask
ituneshelper
DeltaIITray
ccApp
DeltTray
DeltaIITray
LogitechDesktopManager
ctfmon
NMBgMonitor
LogitechDesktopManager
Logitech SetPoint

Don't know which ones are crucial to keep checked.

I tried moving it to a different PCI slot, and my computer just crashed. When I booted it up, the screen was set to the lowest possible resolution and the colors were set to 4bit. So I tried to restart and it froze up. When, I tried to reboot the 3rd time, it will not get past a DOS screen that I cannot read b/c the words are half on the screen. Am using my TV as my monitor, so I need to connect it to a monitor with a wired keyboard and mouse.

I agree, disable all from that list.  You'd need lots of RAM to keep the PC stable with that lot constantly running.

Using TV as monitor?   Can you get hold of a proper monitor and try that?  Just trying to identify some oddities in your setup.  That's one, and opens up the possibility of a mismatch between your graphics card and TV.

woo hoo. I'm back up. Had to remove everything from all PCI slots. Then had to re-install all but one USB 4port PCI card. Then had to re assign the hardware to different IRQ's in the BIOS. Took my whole Friday evening and night. It really sucked earlier b/c when it was frozen up and barely running I had to back up my whole C drive and all of my documents to an External HD via USB 1.0 b/c I had removed my USB 2.0 PCI card. It took about 3.5 hours to backup 6GB of information. How did we ever survive using 1.0 back then. I disabled all start up programs except my AP 24/96 and my Norton internet security. In addition, I uninstalled my old sound card, printer port, 3.5 floppy drive, and communications port (telephone & modem). By disabling them, it allowed more IRQ's to open up. It still appears that there are 2 other items on the same IRQ with the soundcard, but at least it is on IRQ 11. Typically you want your sound card to be on an IRQ less than 15. Mine was set on 17 along with 2 other devices. Just glad I didn't fry my computer. After everything I did, I still get one little pop, but sporadically when a I have multiple programs open and am streaming music from the LMA. Holy cow that was long explanation. NOLA out.

My computer is fine. Runs at 1024 DDR @ 2.4Ghz. I am happy with it. Note to self, don't try to change more than one PCI card at a time.
