Title: Problems with H120 remote while recording
Post by: HarpDoc on February 01, 2008, 01:28:44 AM
I don't know if anyone uses the remote when they're recording with their Rockboxed H1xx. I've never had a remote, but I just got one off Ebay for my H120. My hope was to use it for discrete/convenient recording of concerts. The problem is, the recording level meters don't work on the remote. Everything else seems to work fine, but these are what I need. On the remote, the meters seem locked into a permanent peak hold (on the H120, the meters work fine). In other words, the levels move up to the peak, then just lock. They'll move up again for a higher peak, but they never move down.

This happened with the 1/23/08 Rockbox build, then I just updated to today's build. It makes no difference. Help!!!

Thanks in advance.

Did you post this bug report on the rockbox site too? The dudes over there might be able to sort it out faster.

Here at TS.com, the Iriver remote has a bad reputation of introducing noise to the recording, so it's not extensively used.
Perhaps it's only a few spoilt units that caused this reputation, but most of us folks prefer not to take the risk...

I use my remote almost every time i use my iriver ihp-120 (since i primarly use it as my stealth rig) and never have any issues with rockbox.  i also dont have any of the issues that many complain of (noise).  so long as you are using an external pre for your mics, the remote should be fine in regards to noise.

in regards to the question at hand, i believe there is a menu option that turns the remote metering on and off... but maybe that is just the peak light.

either way... good luck!  that remote is awesome in non-open situations.

I did post on Rockbox: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=15242.0

Nothing that I've been able to do has helped. Maybe I got a bad remote on Ebay. Very strange.

Your remote is fine.  I upgraded my versions of rockbox (140 & 320) and experienced the same permanent peak hold thing.

Some new features look good, and I think will get worked out with our help.

By the way, did you have any luck with cleaning your jacks per my reply to your other post at rockbox.org. Guysonic used to have some info on his Sonic Studios website about this.  Worked well for me with the same issues.

Bugg, thanks for the info. This gives me hope. Is there an older version of Rockbox that you've had success with?

Haven't tried cleaning the mic jacks. The reason is that my mics died the last show that I recorded and I've since ordered from Church Audio some cards and 9100 preamp. I've got some Caig contact cleaner that's meant for cleaning pots and jacks. That should work, right?

" Bugg, thanks for the info. This gives me hope. Is there an older version of Rockbox that you've had success with?"

Yeah, no problem.  I do have plenty of older versions. I'll look and see.  I know the version in the sig file of MMM on the rockbox.org forum contains a link to a working version with the Recording Enhancement Pack is there.  the REP is cool as it add a histogram  and re sizable peak meters and some other stuff. Thing is, it's partly incorporated into the daily builds of rockbox now.  So it hasn't been updated for current builds.  But right now, that is a plus.....

Died how?

Yes, but I use 92% alcohol.  Less than a dollar US for a pint.  Caig also make a contact enhancer/protector.  That might be helpful.

BTW, I've just seen your new post to LLorean in your thread.....

I'm back to the Recording Enhancement Pack and all is well. Not only does the remote now work, but I enjoy the other added features. I'd used it in the past and it's like going back to an old friend.

As for my dead mics, a couple years ago I made some mics with Panasonic elements using the Linkwitz mod, and mounted them in Croakies. I've always been pleased with them, but one of them has gone bad (super noisy) and I don't see an easy way to fix it since the connection is hot glued inside an aluminum tube. Anyway, I've been looking for an excuse to upgrade, so now I've got it!

Thanks for your help Joe.

Glad all is well for now, but a few of the features seem worthwhile.
