Title: newbie question - all these dang taping acronyms?
Post by: ozarkbilly on February 07, 2008, 08:46:03 PM
So I'm just getting into the hobby and I'm seeing all sorts of acronyms, for anything from mic placement to torrent sites.  Anyone, please feel free to throw out a taping acronym and what it stands for.  I would appreciate it.  ;D

FoB - front of board. This means that the taper stood in front of the soundboard (where the mix is usually the best)

Keep in mind that many tapers use these terms loosely.  For example, FOB (Front of Board).  In some venues, the whole venue is FOB, so noting the recording as "FOB" doesn't tell the user much of anything.  In other venues, the board is waaaaaay the hell back, a loooooong ways from the stage, so FOB doesn't tell you much.  Similar with DFC.  I've seen tapers label their recordings "DFC" when they're ~15' off center in a venue that's only 40' wide.  In other words, take 'em - especially those two - with a grain of salt.

The mic configurations, like XY, MS, DIN, DINA, ORTF, NOS, AB, are worth learning, and trying, as a reference point.  Then based on what you find, tweak your mic configurations as necessary for the specific recording scenario in which you find yourself.  This takes time, so have fun while you're doing it.  :)  Cue boojum to reference the Stereophonic Zoom in 3...2...

PAS = Point At Stacks

The abbreviations you see in lineages most often will be model numbers of mics, preamps or recorders. And sometimes they aren't easy to decode.

A good book that will help is Bartlett & Bartlett's "Recording Music on Location." Most of the info and even parts of the book are spread here and there on the web but its nice to have things in one volume that you can read while sitting on the John. The Appendix is worth the cost alone ($22.99, probably cheaper if you look around). All those mic arrangement acronyms are covered in detail. ORTF, NOS & DIN (& DINa) are not acronyms for English words so don't hurt your head trying to figure them out (unless you speak French, Dutch & German), just learn what they represent.

CA STC-11 > CA-9100 > R-09 (CA mod)

Is this as 'CA' as someone could get?

I think you should get some CA boxer shorts with all that.

Hmmm ... what would a CA t-shirt say? "I'm small" ???

Even though the acronyms stand for words in non-English language, nobody's explained what they mean in actual practice.

ORTF -  Mics spread with capsule centers 17cm apart and mics pointed capsules outward from each other with 110 degrees of angle between them.

DINa - Mics spread with capsule centers 17cm apart and mics pointed capsules outward from each other with 90 degrees of angle between them.

DIN - Mics spread with capsule centers 20cm apart and mics pointed capsules outward from each other with 90 degrees of angle between them.

NOS - Mics spread with capsule centers 30cm apart and mics pointed capsules outward from each other with 90 degrees of angle between them.

XY 90 - Mics coincident and mic capsules pointed inward with 90 degrees of angle between them.  Coincident means that the the capsules are directly on top of each in a vertical plane.

XY 120 - Mics coincident and mic capsules pointed inward with 120 degrees of angle between them.

YMMV = your mileage may vary
OTOH = on the other hand
PITA = pain in the ass
I thought QFT meant Quite Freakin True although an earlier response provided a different meaning.

...and a famous taperssection acronym

STFU = shut the f*** up

...but the most famous of all

bip bip = bump

Also kidna funny to point out but 'taping' is kinda an acronym for 'recording'.

Very few people on this list actually use tape anymore.   ;)

tonedeaf, this is an excerpt from a real conversation:

me (italian) to my wife: "ok, I tape this show..."
my wife (american) to me: "don't you have a digital recorder? I thought they have no tape anymore"
