Title: SP C4 better than DPA4061?
Post by: Wiesel on February 14, 2008, 06:37:01 AM
I was thinking about getting those studio project mics for open taping occasions and am wondering if they are an improvement in terms of sound quality (using the c4 omni caps) over my dpa 4061s. Did anyone ever compare them?

Oh and I don't want to open an extra thread but could you please point me in the right direction of what I would need between the c4s and my iriver h120? is there something like a 48v battery box?

This is apt to start a holy war...

I think the C4 and the 4061 are completely different animals and a comparison is hard.  Go to the live music archive and listen to some of each and make your own decisions.

A couple of good preamps to go in that chain are:
- digi-mod Edirol UA-5
- Denecke PS2 (48v bat box) > Denecke AD-20
Either of these are frequently in the yard sale.

Don't know the seller at all, but these are in the yard right now:

I agree with SmokinJoe, the mics you want to compare are completely different beasts.  I use to have a pair of DPA4061, but now have settled for what is in my sig file.

Recordings on the live music archive were the reason for this thread. I listened to some tracks and didn't really have the feeling that those mics are an improvement over my dpa's so I am now wondering if it would make any sense to get the C4s for open taping if I could use the dpa's as well. The only advantage that I can see is having cardioid caps too (and the option to buy hypers) and not being limited to omnis all the time.

thanks for the preamp tips!

Some other potential advantages for the C4s for open taping would be:

Balanced outputs mean you can use very long cable runs when needed.

Because they offer cardioid capsules, you can get a good stereo image out of near conincident configurations whereas with omnis you'd probably want a wide split or a Jecklin disc.  So even though the C4s are bigger, they are potentially easier and less obtrusive to mount up high on a stand.

Sorry to say, but I used to have a pair of C4-s, and never got a good recording from them. If you want to take a step upwards, personally I believe it starts at Neumann KM184 and/or KM183.

That's a helluva step upwards. I think you missed a step or two.

I sure do like my dpa's, nice recordings, real consistant.
