Title: how necesarry is a preamp?

we run a tascam digital 16 track recorder that has a built in preamp but are wondering if we woulb benefit from buying one?

Yes.  You would.  On my digital 12 track recorder, I noticed a difference when I put a Mackie VLZ mixer in the mic chain... and that's not even really a preamp designed for solely pre-amping (if that makes sense...???) - a true preamp will make quite a difference... more full sound.

Get one from Guitar Center or something, and do the 30 day  "musicians loan" !  ;D

Yup... I was skeptical at first... but, even with something that isn't dedicated, it made a world of difference... I would love to hear my multi-track recordings w/ a dedicated pre.

I have already decided that I am going to use my w-mod UA-5 for multitracking the guitar... I can't wait to hear how that sounds!

IMO the preamps in the Mackie mixers rival most of our outboard gear.

The pre-amp has the most impact on the sound after the microphones.
Everyone here has heard the difference a good pre-amp makes. And as far as that goes, there are good and maybe not so good combnations of microphones and pre-amps. There has been plenty of discussion about this in various threads.

they dont touch allen and heath, im a big fluffer of a&e cant you tell
-and to the question, outboard pre's can make a world of difference

most defineately.resolution,headroom,signal to noise ratio every aspect of the pre-amplification will be better.

now it all depends on how many  mic pre channels u need and as well  you could the applications /sources where it might be used,and what you are seeking after in a pre-amp?
