I'll give one vote for a Nova4. you can use the provided velcro dividers to customize the space. If you are little tight on room, as I was, you can use adhesive velcro patches to keep it off the bottom of the bag.

UA5, two wally-world batts, a JB3, optical cable, t-bar, and mics all fit in a Nova 1. Small shock mounts, and small mics (Avantone SSM/KM184 etc) can stay on the t-bar. Stick the strap through your wound-up cables and you have a nice compact rig. It's a tight fit but if you have the optical and battery cables plugged in before you put the UA5 in the bag then you don't have to pull the UA5 out of the bag at the venue. It's so tight a fit you don't have to worry about items moving and scratching each other. UA5 and batts go in main compartment with the JB3 on top of them. Shocks/mics/bar go in front pocket. Small windscreens fit on mics and keep them from rubbing on things. Small Windtech style clamp can fit in flap pocket. Earplugs, Sharpie, flashlight, etc can fit in side mesh pockets. Add a stand and you have a complete open rig.

If you run larger mics or larger shock mounts then you'll have to find other arrangements for them - like moving to a Nova 3 or 4.

Velcro was bought at Home Depot. Instead of using the industrial strength adhesive, I went with the vinyl safe adhesive b/c I figured it could be removed with little or no residue.

Step 1: Add extra velcro to inside of bag

Step 2: Velcro on the back of the V3

Step 3: Put V3 in place

At first I used one of these:  Case Logic PDVK3.  Everything fit perfectly...

Later I bought a Sonicase and built a home depot cage...

I use a LowePro Rezo 170. Fits my UA5 with 6" steel rulers Velcroed to either side, mics, T-bar, Wally batteries, clamp. Cables hang on the shoulder strap. Nice small package.

I jumped on the Lowepro Nova 5 bandwagon some time ago and couldn't be happier. If you don't want to drop the $50 or so how about checking out the fishing tackle bags at your local Wal-Mart or sporting goods store? I'm sure for like $20 you can get something with a rubberized bottom and many pockets. Look for the leftovers from last year that are on Clearance.

Lowe Alpine Mesa Runner. I think this is a non-US model, which is smaller than a Nova, but suits me fine. The lid is unobtrusive, so I can adjust levels on the UA-5 by just unzipping, and keep it strapped to the waist during the gig. I found the lid on the Nova range too large and stiff, it gets in the way when folding upwards.

Great model for any Euro based tapers out there! They can be picked up on Ebay for less than $10 used.

Easily fits a UA5, battery, JB3 and my 853RX's, but still slim enough to sneak through unattentive security if you wear a fluffy jacket ;-)

i like my rakgear backpack.  i have the UA-5 zip tied to the rack which keeps the back connections protected. i keep the optical cable and battery cable connected so when i set up all i have to do is plug in the battery and optical cable and i am running, the RCA connection on the rack is hooked up for matrix recordings with out having to remove the UA-5 to plug in.

PETROL Nuff said!

I am done with wiring photo bags for recording applications... There are great recording bags made for what we do. They have movable dividers, all Velcro capable inside.... All walls have ducts for running wires from one compartment to the next... There are extended drawstring access ports tor running mic cables out and into the bag.. there are battery compartments and snap on pouches for transmitters.. I use them for batteries... there are cable ties built on the bag for holding long mic cables that are wired into the bag.. There is a clear top yes clear so when you are outside in the elements you can see the meters though the cleat top! Or when th ebag is on the floor and the drunk trips and the beer flys!... The whole bag zips apart for easy access.. Look at the picture for the pegz 1... They all do that!  The choice is simple... 3 sizes for how ever you carry your gear... Not for stealth use! LOL

Here is the petrol PEGZ-1

I use- The North Face "Kanga".

The UA-5 fits like a glove.
I have a piece of plexiglass ziptied to each side of the UA-5 to keep the connections off the bottom of the bag kinda like those V2/3 brackets FS in the YS except mine are on the top/bottom, rather than the two sides.

Inside that bag I can fit the W+ UA-5, 12' silver clad cables, A-20s, MT+ it's AA batt. pack, windscreens, DVD Batt., and my Pelican 1040 holding my K&M clamp, SG21/17's (clips/mounts), and a pair of 140's.

I never wear this "fag bag" (not that there's anything wrong with that) as my friend calls it, because it's too heavy to wear on my waist (bounces too much) I usually carry it by the handle.
