Damnit Massdrop!
« on: April 13, 2019, 04:48:30 PM »
Just when I've decided that the M'drop Sennheiser HD6xx cans are about as far as I need to go up scale, they come with the Meze 99 Noir closed back at $200. In the same $$ range as the 6xx from them but... they sure do look nice IMO. It looks like they might favor a bit of the bass lover in me but I don't know if they'd be worth it to learn. I know the difference between open and closed back is significant so I'm looking for some personal experiences w/both.  TIA.

I don't use cans much but I might if I had these. I have a 20 year old pair of Decent Senns, can't remember which, cost me like $140. They're so old the model has worn off and the headband thingy is a towel. Damn you Massdrop. And you Ben.

Yeah, indeed... I've got cans coming out of my ears. Some would call me a SLUT.  The shoe fits.

Damnit Massdrop......

I just purchased a pair of Senn 650's from B&H for $350. Yes I like the 15' cable instead of the 9' Massdrop cable and I like the 1/4" plug with the 1/8" adapter but I dont think I like it $130 more.

Is anyone aware of any other non-cosmetic differences between the normal Senn 650's and the Massdrop 6xx's? I could still return my new pair and get the Massdrop ones.

I'm not a great Senn mind but from the Mdrop pages:

Good news for fans of the HD 650: In this revision, the driver structure and sound signature haven’t changed a bit. You’ll get the same smooth, laid-back presentation, with a balanced midrange and natural-sounding bass. The HD 650 is considered more refined and better damped than its predecessor, the HD 600, with less energy in the upper midrange (which some listeners may find less fatiguing) and an overall balance that’s a bit warmer and bassier. Its neutral response provides a pleasant listening experience with any musical genre from a range of sources. Plus, it responds well to improved sources and amplification, and headphone amplifiers of any output impedance could potentially make a good match.

So, buy an extension cord and see if you can return the  650's. I run my 6xx's out of my PC/USB > Grace SDAC > O2 (Objective 2) phone amp. The latter two from Massdrop and I couldn't be convinced right now that I need spend more. They sell a combo Grace SDAC+O2 amp. for $150 which is a little less than the pair.

On another note, I bit on Meze 99 Noirs. As George Takei would say, "OH, MY!" The comfort, the refined elevated bass... not what I've been used to with the 6xx's. I'll continue to use them to monitor my mixes but these Meze cans are going out to the living room for some fun.  :headphones:
