Low Freq. Hum on AT 943, SP-SB11
« on: March 15, 2008, 11:39:28 AM »
Hi all,

I recorded a show last night with the following rig:

AT943 (C) > SP-SB11 > Sony D50 Mic Input (plug-in power off)

On inspection of the recording I hear a very audible low frequency hum.  I am lost as to what is causing this.  I have attached a sample.  If anyone could help me out to fix this issue that would be awesome, I have another show at the same venue I am taping this evening.

Thanks in advance for all guidance and insight.

I do not use the set up you mentioned but i had a hum a couple years back with my DPA 4022> denecke PS2> blah blah

but anyway what it happened to be was a bad connection from my transformer RCA's male to female, the connection gave off a hum.

I know this is not your rig, but i guess what i am trying to say is that it might be in your connections not the mic.  In addition, it was only the 2nd time running my particular set up and i got hum, so it had nothing to do with use or over use, just bad connectors

UPDATE:

Tried alternate cables - same venue - same issue.
Tried same cables - my living room - no issue.

I listened, but did not hear anything audible while sitting in the same location at the venue.  Could it be some strange interference? Could it be HVAC or amp noise that I just can't hear when I'm sitting there?

Really frustrating and trying to make sure I avoid it in the future.  Anyone have any opinions on whether this could be ambient noise at this venue?  Or does it seem like it is being created by the recording hardware?

Thanks in advance for help.

Check to make sure both capsules on your mics are well screwed on. And that the little gold tab inside the mic body is center with the center pin on the capsule. And if that fails I would suspect a bad ground somewhere on your battery box Maybe? its hard to say.
