It's a pretty sweet model. Not sure on the pricing though. I'll check it out when I'm at NAB in April.

Nagra hasn't had much luck with their past recorders, maybe this one will work better for them.

Looks like 6ch is the new 4ch... do you think the folks at Sound Devices is headed in the same direction?  or at least 4ch with 4 Pre's?

I want to move to 4 or 6 ch but Zaxcom is probably out of my $'s...

All the channels are for ISO tracks in film. Basically, you have track 1 which is your mix track, everything else boom, lavs, go on their own channel. That's why you're starting to see 4+ tracks. The Deva 16 should be out by NAB, so you'll have a real 16 channel portable recorder out there too. For the taper/hobbyist, I don't see much past 6 being that useful. However if you are doing a lot of recording, then you might have individual feeds from the board and staged audience mics, in which case you'll need more than the 4 or 6 channels these offer.

that thing looks like a bench/prototype version of a DEVA.  needs to be in the 5k range to compete.

I do hope that Jon Tatooles and his crew in Wisconsin are cooking up something that is as rugged as the current 7xx series and with at least 4 pres and 4 in.   I would love that!  And I am sure there are many others.  Offshore is getting more and more expensive for us with US$.

Once you start getting to the six channel range for taping clubs you're probably in with the band or the venue at that point the investment in a small rack case with A/C powered gear can be considered, the expense of an on-location recorder really starts to be questionable at these incredibly high price points.  The film guys need battery and portable aspect as they might not be anywhere near a set of mains.

Really enjoyed the recordings I've heard done with the Nagra V, hopefully this translates.

There's something behind your points here, but IME it is better to have a battery-powered field rig in most smaller venues/clubs due to dirty power issues, footprint/space concerns, and the hassle-factor of 4 or 6 track vs. 16-24 or more tracks (which you might as well be doing if bringing out a rack case when recording).

There's something behind your points here, but IME it is better to have a battery-powered field rig in most smaller venues/clubs due to dirty power issues, footprint/space concerns, and the hassle-factor of 4 or 6 track vs. 16-24 or more tracks (which you might as well be doing if bringing out a rack case when recording).

A decent Filter in the rack should address most problems and if it IS that bad then the signal is going to reflect it through the PA and instruments regardless.  Though having the portable setup "anywhere in a box" rig is way cool.

Price should be around £3,200 in the UK based on the exchange rate at the time I discussed this with Nagra in January.

Keep us in the loop.  I would love to know what you think about this pup.  I do hope that SD has something.  I like their gear and the idea of shipping a recorder to Switzerland for proper repairs is disheartening.  And I do like my SD 722.  I would like to get another but hope to hear something from the guys at SD in a press release about a new 4 - 6 ch machine.
