Core Sound HEB- balance off- anyone else notice this?
« on: June 09, 2008, 06:43:32 PM »
Hi, I just picked up my Core Sound HEB with the battery box that they sell after having a repair done for the wiring inside. I'm not techie, but thought I would run this by you guys that know more then I do (pretty much everyone ;-) but I have the new Edirol R-09HR and after plugging it in, it seems that the left channel is decidely less then the right channel- WTF? I know that in post I can adjust it, but has anyone dealt with this before. Before it wasn't an issue as I would adjust the gain with the MIC2496 but with the Edirol I'm unable. Short of getting a pre-amp, I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if so is this generic to this type of setup. I would like to go mic in as I have a show to record tomorrow evening and don't like the fact that one channel is less then the other

When testing mics its important to start with a source that is say a single tone like a 1khz sine wave. Put both mics side by side and record them. They should be very close to one another. If they are not talk to Len at Core. If for some reason that does not work out send me a pm and I will be glad to look at them for you.

Hi Chris-Well, talking to Core/Len isn't going to happen- Been there and done that (many threads where I and others have  gone that route with less then satisfactory results) - Also, since DPA replaced one of the mics, it's no longer Core's responsibility (one mic was per Core 'abused' and as many others that have dealt with Core have found out, they've sent their HEB to DPA and there seems to be a disproportinate amount of Core Sound DPA's that have failed. Here's a sampling of other 'satisfied' members here on just the mics ;-)

I've been using my DPA4061 HEBs for almost 10 years now without issue. I squished the cable near the capsule on one of them, but it didn't seem to affect performance. I never noticed any imbalance with my D100, but since switching to an R-09 the last 6 months I have noticed the right side being 2-3 dB louder (and it's the right one that I muched above). Maybe it's some sort of strange impedance mismatch between the left channel of the HEB BB and the left channel of the R-09 input.  :D

Thanks for the feedback Jeff- so your getting the same results as I am I believe- I'm not sure how many db but yes, my right side is decidedly louder from what I can tell. I have a feeling though since I've not seen it with any other mics that it's in the wiring somewhere with how the mics are cabled or the setup that Core does. Perhaps someone who makes mics can explain it but I'm not seeing any other posts with mics on the Edirol, but mine is the new HR unit. Thanks again, and good luck with your mics-

Well, now it's more the just one channel being louder- the left channel comes and goes- so it's a cable or connection problem- either with the mic, battery box, or as the repair facility said the Edirol itself. I'm going to bring them all in have them take a take. Thanks again Chris for your feedback.

sounds like it could be the battery box, ive been thru a few of them with Core over the years, Is the Battery box the switchable with toggle switch or do you have the flat or filter box

BB is switchable with the Toggle-
But the repair facitlity had both. I know that it's between the two of them (Mics and battery box wires) but they're trying to state that it probably the Edirol which I doubt. The weird thing is that when I brought it in I couldn't get the left channel period. Sweetwater (which sold me the Ediorl) tech guy was really good- had me plug in the headphones here at work and it worked fine which isolated it between the unit and mics. Last night while recording, 95% of the time the recording was fine, but I had to play with either the plug input into the unit or the battery box to get the left channel working again. Talk about frustration. This time I can give them more time working with my unit and the mics and BB. We'll see- if anyone knows of "THE EXPERT" for mic repairs, let me know- I may need to avail myself of one ;-)

It could be the edirol try the mic input and see if that makes a difference. And not the line input if that does make a differnce then it is your edirol that is the issue. I suspect its the edirol because they do have an issue with the line input.
